transportation between islands
We are going for our honeymoon to greece in 6 weeks! arriving into athens and going to hydra, mykonos, and santorini. Any suggestions on transportation between islands? Apparently there is no ferry from Mykonos to Santorini this June but that is how people recommend to go - any alternatives? Also, any ideas for going to Hydra? thanks.

http://www.paleologos.gr/domstep2.asp?route=HERAKLION_%28CRETE%29-SANTORINI&B1=Search

Did you check here? It looks to me like the summer schedule between May 11 and June 21 isn't posted yet, but I can't imagine that there won't be ferry service during that period since the route is very popular. The main web site for ferry info is www.ferries.gr

check out www.gtp.gr they have the schedules if you look under domestic sea schedules. They are not the easiest to understand as they think you know the area, island, port etc. We are trying to figure out Samos to Santorini.

Once again go into www.greecetravel.com I would be extremely surprised if there was no ferry in June, that seems unthinkable to me. Where are you getting your info from, I'm glad I haven't found that website yet? There are day excursions to Hydra but no ferry from there to Mykonos, you have to travel back to Piraeus.

To get to Hydra take the hydrofoil or Cat from Pireaus it's the only way to get to Argo-Saronic Islands and you have to go back to Pireaus you cannot connect to the Cyclades directly from Hydra. It seems impossible that there is no ferry running from Mykonos to Santorini, there may not be a direct one but there should be one that stops in in Paros or Naxos and then continues to Santorini.

I was looking for a direct hydrafoil or ferry from Mykonos to Santorini. Hella Dolphin travel told me that the only thing available takes 7 hours - we don't want to take an entire day in travel so we are looking for alternatives. how do i book a hydrofoil?

Apparently, the Hellas Flying Dolphins catamarans from Mykonos to Santorini will start running on June 21st only.
Trips take 2:20 hours and departures are scheduled at 9:10am (daily) and 3:15pm (daily except Tuesdays).
As things stand now, before June 21st, one either has to travel by air or take a Minoan Flying Dolphins catamaran to Paros (departures at 10:00am, arrival at 10:40am) and a ferry thereafter (trip of about 4:30 hours).

We flew between Athens, Santorini and Mykonos.. (chartered a yacht for sail to Hydra and the Saronic gulf islands). Our flights were inexpensive fast and ontime, though I don't know if we were just lucky.
For two people, all 3 flights were just $133.00 not PP but total. I would recommend flying as we were pressed for time.

Well, thanks for the input... looks like a flight might be our best option. does anyone know the chance of the hellas flying dolphin schedule changing? are we able to pay extra for a hydrafoil or water taxi for ourselves through any other company? any ideas. also, there only seems to be one flight a day to santorini from mykonos - thanks in advance!

Please take my advice, DO NOT take the ferry. It took us over 10 hours from Athens to Santorni and it was miserable. We thought it would be too expensive to fly, but it turns out that flying is pretty cheap so we flew back to Athen after our stay. Also, if you decide to rent a car, go to National car rental in Santorini and I think the woman's name was Eleana? She was so nice and rented us a jeep for around 30$ a day, it was much safer than the motor bikes, I saw two bad motorbike accidents. Also you must go to LUCKY's for a great cheap souvlaiki sandwhich. And if you want an excellent five star dinner that will not leave you broke go to KAFE KASTRO in OIA-Santorini phone 028671045. It has a great view and great food. ENJOY!!
