wemr is just slightly confused. Stratford is a VERY long distance from Stonehenge.
Annonymous has it right - very easy - simply take the train to Salisbury and a short local buss ride to Stonehenge.

While you noted that you did not want to take a tour, the LondonWalks day trip to Salisbury and Stonehenge was excellent. The guide had information I would not have gotten without her. In addition, the route taken and her pointing out sites from Salisbury to Stonehenge was a highlight of the day. Plus, do not miss Salisbury cathedral. Check out the website...London.Walks.com

Sorry, but I can't let that funny typo in the title (I guess that's what it was even though it appeared twice) go unanswered.
Stonehinge is a great place. It's where you can explore hands on. All the big rocks are hinged so you can move them back and forth and rearrange them. It's sort of like Legoland for adults.
(Please take no offense -- I just thought the idea of a Stonehinge was humorous.)

Driving yourself is a great way to see the countryside. You can plan the time that you visit Stonehenge. Early early morning is best as there usually aren't too many tourists. You can also take a drive around the other, less famous though as interesting stone circles in the area. Plus, the white horse is not far. I also recommend Salisbury Cathedral where there is an original copy of the magna carta.
