I know I basically need to get from Rome to Naples and onward. The trip is next month when I think boats are still running.

Because our days are limited, I am investigating the cost of the helicopter transport (an indulgence, but it is a big anniversary trip). I'm guessing it may be too far over budget, so the next approach is by boat.

I'd welcome any comments from folks who have done one or the other of these options. (Yes, I know about the bus options - just hate busses)

No clue what a helicopter would cost (not sure it could land in Positano). A driver from Rome would run around 400€. A driver from Naples to Positano will run around 120-130€ (that's the set fee for taxis so other drivers stay around the same price).

I'm not sure why you hate buses. The bus from Rome is more like a tour bus, not a city bus. The buses along the cost are similar (although usually packed). The luggage goes underneath.

You can train from Rome (Termini or Tiburtina) to either Naples or Salerno and arrange transport from there to Positano. Italorail operates trains departing Tiburtina.

A helicopter in Positano? I can't imagine where it could land!

I'd suggest taking the fast train from Rome to Naples. The trip is just over an hour.

From Naples, you could hire a private transfer ( we just paid E120 for this trip two weeks ago), or, take the local train to Sorrento, then the boat ( if boats are still running then.

The boat from Sorrento to Positano is fairly cheap and takes about 30-45 minutes.

The certainly appears to be a number of firms who offer transfers or tours via helicopter from Naples airport to the AC villages. None of the ones I've seen however, give prices on their websites. Google: helicopter Naples to Positano and take your pick.

We've done the ferries and driven down and would be happy with either option.

Another great option is direct train from Rome to Salerno, and then ferry from Salerno to Positano. A gorgeous way to see the coast and much easier than the bus.

KYbourbon- busses and my stomach do not agree. To go further would be TMI, trust me- I've done the hairpin turns in Switzerland. I need to walk my views.

You are all correct- I heard back from the helicopter people- no helipad in Positano.

I like ekc on this- I will look into the Rome/Salerno/Ferry option. A little Dramamine makes that manageable.

Well the road all along the coast is VERY narrow and winding - cut into the side of the cliff - so if no bus you will need to do cabs - or ferries (and the schedules of the latter are limited).

Are you planning on doing a lot of touring - or just staying in one spot.

Thanks all. The lodging plan is now set. 3 nights in Sorrento and 1 night in Ravello before we head back to get our plane. Yes, private drivers who will stop when I need a break and much dramamine are my plan.

I was also looking for a quick way to get to Positano and I found them, they are a company from Rome and prices for helicopter transfers are affordable compared to their competitors.

Helicopters are an excellent argument for arming the general public with surface-to-air missiles.
