Trains in Scotland

I will be staying near Oban, Argyll in Scotland. Are the trains pretty reliable there? I was hoping to visit Edinburgh and to take a train back to Oban that night. Does anyone know approx. how long the train ride would be from Edinburgh to Oban? Should I consider a hotel for the night in Edinburgh instead? If so, any recommendations? Tks!

I have found the service to be reliable. As for time: Oban to Edinburgh via Glasgow Queen Street Station, Departs 8:13 , arriving 12:36. A later train departs Oban 1:20, arriving Edinburgh 5:21. The return would be the 5:15 train from Edinburgh, arriving Oban at 8:22.

I'd spend the night - the cheapo option (unless you want a hostel) would be a Saver Room at the Travelodge in St Mary's Street when it could cost as litle as £26 PER ROOM. The earliest I can see such a room currently is the end of September, then they become more frequently available (except after Christmas till the 2nd Jan and for some Rugby matches) as far as I can see

I would stay overnight in Edinburgh; you really can't see much in 5 hours.
