rineeurope thanks for info!
. Your 2nd class Eurail pass will not be valid on this train.>
normally with a 2nd class pass you can ride a first class train or train car by paying the difference in price between the 2nd class fare and first class fare - I wonder if this is possible on the Leonardo Express?
And I guess the regional trains indeed do not run to Termini station from the airport as I suspected but only to Trastever and other secondary Rome stations.

>>>>The actual train car may be similar but since the Leonardo Express don't stop before Termini at least folks will not be standing all over the car as I have experienced on the regional trains that stop at several stations<<<<
I have never ridden the Leonardo (I almost always fly in and out of Rome and usually take this train) when there weren't people standing in the aisles with luggage. I haven't been lucky enough to ride the newer train yet even though I was in Rome a month ago. I did get to ride a new IC train from Pompei to Salerno which was quite nice. Wide aisles, good ac and very clean. Hopefully, any new Leonardo trains will eliminate stairs to board.

I doubt it since there is no class difference (all one price - 14€).

1. You asked if it was possible on the Leonardo.
2. No point in going to Ostiense if you are going from FCO to Civitavecchia. You reach Trastevere before Ostiense so no point in going further than necessary.
3. That train (FR1) has no class distinction either. All one class (8€). How could they charge the difference when there isn't any?
You would take the FR1 to Trastevere and change to the FR5 to Civitavecchia. You can see these train lines on this map.

I was talking in general about regional vs dedicated airport trains and not about going to Civitavecchia, which from the airport would be best reached by bus from the airport or taxi to a train station well out of Rome en route to Civitavecchia. Backtracking to Rome's Trastevere station and then going back out to Civitavecchia seems a round about route. But maybe there ain't no airport buses to Civitavecchia or to nearby train stations on the line to Civitavecchia - but there must be mini-van airport transfers, etc.
Anyway if going from airport to Civitavecchia I would investigate alternatives to the slow slow trains bourbon advises above via going to Rome then back out to the coast.

There isn't a bus service to Civitavecchia and it's not backtracking to go to Trastevere if you are headed to Civitiavecchia from the airport. Certainly, no where near the backtracking you suggested of going all the way to Termini. The trains from Rome to Civitavecchia starting in Trastever are only 15-20 minutes slower than the so called fast trains from Termini to Civitavecchia, but it would take 20 minutes more to go all the way to Termini to catch a one and they don't run often. Ostiense doesn't have any dedicated airport train. It's just the FR1 that passes through many stations in Rome (including Trastevere) on it's way to Tiburtina (a major train station/bus hub which is on the metro).
You could book a limo for about 120€ versus 10€ or less for trains. Drive time is not much faster (about an hour) than the train through Trastevere (about 1 1/2 hours).

For the umpteenth time my comments about going to Termini were not specific to Civitavecchia but for general - and for the OP I did say from Termini because they were pondering taking a train to Rome from the North.
Of course if going by train from FCO to Civitavecchia you'd only go to Trastevere.
Still seems there must be some bus service from FCO over that way.
