train to florence

is rail europe the only way to buy train tickets? we're a little put off by the number of additional fees for a ticket from salerno to florence. a $50 ticket ends up just shy of 100 bucks.

Buy them there - - from any rail station in europe. That $50 ticket will probably cost $40 or less. Chances are, you can confirm the actual price on www.trenitalia.com or on www.railsaver.com (I didn't try to check it for you)

Best wishes,

Rex

most everyone in our group has purchased their tickets - we just worry we won't get them there although we can purchase them in rome a week before we need them.

A week will be plenty of time. There are frequent trains on that route.
Hello Jimmy,

Salerno-Florence by Eurostar is Euro 43.80 - 2nd.class.
This includes seat reservation.

(1st class is 50% more but not worth it IMO).

You will not have the slightest problem booking in Rome.
(If you're arriving at FCO you can book all your rail tickets in advance there).

Save the rail europe 100% mark-up for gelati!

Steve

jimmy:

If you are travelling with a group, the best you could possibly do is to ask everyone to return their ticket and get a refund. Once you are in Italy, reach one railway station and get yourself a group ticket, which will allow you to save at least the 20% on the single ticket price. Group tickets are issued for groups counting 6 people or more and are really far cheaper than buying single tickets. Obviously, without cutting on the train's services.

we bought our tickets when we got to rome for two days later. We purchased them at the American Express Office near the Spanish Steps. Very easy.
