Can anyone advise on the best way to purchase train tickets from Rome to Florence? We want to travel on June 1 and will be 1 adult and 1 junior (teenager). RailEurope last quoted 30 euros. Are there any less expensive fares?

From www.trenitalia.com site, the fare from Rome to Florence seems higher than RailEurope.

Usually I will buy tickets upon arriving Rome; but if you could still get the fare from RailEurope, perhaps might be better jsut go for it.

It's cheaper to buy from Trenitalia and you can wait until you get to Italy. If you want to have them a few days in advance, just purchase when you arrive at the airport.

When we arrived in Rome last October we were undecided as to which day we would go to Florence. Once we had reached a decision, we just went into a travel agent with the Trenitalia logo and booked the tickets for 2 days hence. Very quick and easy.

IC is 36/27E

The raileurope price of 34E is, I believe, without a seat reservation. You must purchase a seat reservation for an ES* train for about $12 from RE + pay S&H.

Either buy your tickets trom Trenitalia online, or wait until you get to Rome.

You can buy them at the train station at FCO when you get your tickets to Rome.

We plan to be in Rome for 3-4 days and take the train from the airport to Tremini, then a subway to our hotel. Do you recommend a pass? Is there 1 that will cover the train from the airport and subway? We are staying at the Paradise Pensione, about a 15 minute walk to the Vatican and 20 minute walk to the city center.

If it says No to a pass, you can believe it.

A Railpass will cover FCO/Rome, but you will use a day for an 11E train.

If you are talking about a Rome pass to cover the metro and busses, then yes, there are several choices, but I don't believe any include the Leonardo Express from the airport. You could take the local train from the airport and get off at one of the stops that has subway connection, but it wouldn't be as easy as I think you would have to transfer subway lines.

There is a one day ticket (BIG)for 4E, a three (BTI) day for 11E seven day (CIS) ticket for 16E. The three day is only listed on the Italian version.

There is also a Roma Pass for 20E which includes transportation and admission to several museums and discounts at others.

I checked into the train to San Pietro station but, yes, the Termini link (via Leonardo express) and the subway to Lepanto or Ottaviano really seemed the best route.

RE travelling to Florence: there are trains virtually every hour and advance purchase, absent some compelling reason such as a reduced fare, seems unnecessary.

But 30 E per ticket seems very low -- we paid more in March.

The commuter train that travels from FCO up to the Ostiense Station - from which you can walk into the Piramide Metro station - is on the recently issued Rome Card, I believe.

I'm so glad to know that there is a train from the airport to a station that connects to the subway line. This should be an efficient way for my daughter and I to get to our pensione.

The Roma Pass looks interesting. Since we are there for 3-4 days maybe it would be wise for us to get this. Does anyone know what museums it covers? We definitely plan to visit the Vatican Museum but are not sure what others.

Just make sure you have change when you get to the subway (if you haven't already bought Roma Passes). The bill-to-coin change machines are not always reliable in every station. Also, as I recall they only accept fairly small denomination bills. Otherwise, the subway is great.

Click on the Roma Pass link I gave for the list of included sites and museums. There are 40+ including the Coliseum (9E) and Borghese (8E). I think it's 2 free and the rest at discount.

I think we will get the Rome Pass at the airport when we arrive so we can use it for the subways. The link said it could be purchased at the airport on concourse C.
Our plans appear to be falling into place.
