My the start of this thread is old, still….
Just to let you know that RENFE have now admitted that there is a software problem associated with their web site.
This summers train schedules have still to be added to the web site. So hang on in there and wait a few more days, but being Spain maybe weeks!

Hi Ribeirasacra,

The summer fares are loaded (at least for my 7/4 departure)--the problem seems to be something else. After inputting credit card info and clicking 'purchase', I get the error message. Been this way for almost a week.

I can understand delays related to loading all the fare data into the system, but it seems odd for a national rail site to be down for almost a week. I didn't read about this being one of the expected glitches with the system.

Oh well...I'll just keep at it.

Cova, are you experiencing the same thing?

Hi mike,
Apparently, according to news reports, Renfe this week has admitted to a major software glitch on its system. Everyone seems to be getting that error message at the final step, so you're in good company. Renfe says that it will soon be fixed, so hang tight!

Hi Mike,

I didnīt have problems at all with the tickets. Mind you, I am using a spanish credit card.

In fact, I bought them on Tuesday for this past weekend, and when I was heading home at lunch time on Friday I was informed of a change in the plans. I ended up cancelling via internet the return trip from Cáceres. It was something I hadnīt seen before on the Renfe website, and it was extremely easy to do. There was also the option to change the tickets, but the trains I wanted were full.

Hope you can get finally get your tickets.

Bye, Cova

Thanks Maribel and Cova.

I was able to buy one ticket early this morning (no Web fares were available for any departure) but I did get an estrella fare. Everything went fine, I printed the ticket and saved it as a PDF.

But, when I tried to buy my wife's ticket, the dreaded error message popped up. Repeatedly. Tried different credit cards, etc. Now I'm concerned we won't get seats together, or won't get them at all.

I'll keep trying while at work today...

Mike

Hi Mike,

you wonīt be able to get seats together right now.

I would try to buy two tickets together and if you get them, return the single ticket you has just bought.

Hi Cova,

What a drag this is!

I looked at my departure on Renfe to see if I could buy two tickets back-to-back so we'll sit together, but no more estrella, just full fares (74.60 euro). I will try another departure time.

I just reviewed my notes and these posts and can't see how I can return the first ticket I bought, can anyone help in this regard?

Mike

Ok, I have only been able to find it in the spanish side :
https://w1.renfe.es/vol/

There is a button called Cambios/Reembolsos at the very top (in grey). Click there, and you will see the following text :
Si quieres cambiar tu billete pulsa AQUÍ

Si quieres que te reembolsemos tu billete pulsa AQUÍ

You want "reembolso", so click on the AQUI, on the second text line.

If you have your PDF, you will see that there is a field called LOCALIZADOR, similar to a ticket id, itīs a long number. Type it inside the field next to "Código de compra", and click on BUSCAR.

It will find your ticket, and it will tell you that you can return your ticket, with a small charge.

I did it last Friday and it was flawless.

Bye, Cova

Boy, those estrella fares dispappeared fast once the Renfe site was up and running.

I tried to follow Cova's good advice and get two tickets one after another at my targeted departure time (8:45am) but the estrella fares (40% discount) were gone (the 60% off web fares had been available earlier, but the Renfe site was down). So I settled for the 7:15am departure, bought it, and when I went back to get my second ticket, the estrella fare on that departure was no longer available. So I ended up getting her the 6:45am departure.

Then I went to return my original 8:45am departure. I'm not sure how much it ended up costing, I was so pressured on the site after seeing fares disappearing before my eyes that I felt rushed. Dumb. Anyway, the receipt says:

precio de la tarifa: 43,55 E
gastos de anulacion: 13,05 E
precio: 30,50 E

Not sure what I was charged for the return of the ticket, but I'm hoping it was only 13,05 E or $20 US.

Overall, a nightmare experience.

Cancellation fee was only 13.05. Sorry you've had to go through such a huge hassle with Renfe!

Oh well, we eventually get to Madrid, albeit on two separate trains, and saved $70 (net) off full fares, so I'm looking at the glass as half full!

I will arrive in Madrid (Atocha station) at 9:15am on car 5, and my wife 40 minutes later on car 8. Is there a specific place in the train stationwe should plan to meet? We won't have cell phones and are concerned about arriving in different locations and not connecting when we arrive.

mike,
Nice way of looking at the situation-you're my kind of traveler!

You could meet at the cafe (it's an Autogrill but it may have another name, can't remember) that has the outdoor terrace set in the tropical garden section, on the same level as where your trains will arrive.

Here are some photos of this area and the cafetería.

There is a restaurant called Samarkanda inside the tropical garden, and I seem to remember that they also have a cafe.

You can see pictures here :

Hi cova,
Do you think that Samarkanda will be open at 9:15 am? I don't remember that they serve that early.
