Trains in Britain at terminus stations like Kings X tend to shut the gates for access to platforms a minute or so before the train pulls out - unlike in most Continental stations where you can hop aboard usually to the very last instance so do not dally! Train doors may also lock a minute before departure!
Have a nice journey - the train's approach to Newcastle itself is rather dramatic - going over the deep gorge thru which a river runs thru town - my trains usually stop right on the viaducts for some time - probably waiting for a platform to clear out in this very very busy junction station.

Are you coming back to London - if so buy a return ticket from Gatwick to Kings X and then until you go back to Gatwick by train I believe you get the 2 for 1 entry offerings at many London sights - saving a bundle - you need a printed train (not tube) ticket for that.

Southern railways link and I believe any train line serving Gatwick - a ticket back to Gatwick on it would entitle you to 2 for 1 tickets in London if that is in the works!

Thank you PalenQ--we are going to drive back to Gatwick and take a few detours along the way, but we are not going into London. I am excited about the train ride to Newcastle, and I appreciate all the info about trains and timing.
