Train Service on the Amalfi Coast
We're planning a 2 week trip to the Amalfi Coast. Im a little confused about train service in that area. I know you can get to Naples easily but from there on I need help. Any Suggestions.

We were in the A.C. And you can only reach Sorrento or Salerno via train. None of them is in de Amalfi Coast, but connections are good via ferry , car or bus.
Most people arrive ia trainto one of those cities and them catch any other transport to Amalfi, Positano, Praiano or any other place.

You can take regular trains to either Naples or Salerno. From Naples there is a special local train to Sorrento (takes about an hour).
Other that that there are no trains. You are limited to SITA local bus (usually mobbed), cab, or ferries. The latter is very limited service, esp outside of high season, and will not run at all if the seas are high.
Sorrento is the last place with several good transit options. The smaller towns down the coast are charming places to stay but not good places to make day trips from.

Concur with above entries, public transportation can be difficult along the Amalfi Coast and as nytraveler advises, at times the buses get so full at the bus stops that people get left off and have to wait up to an hour for the next bus! Have you considered renting a car, don't believe the horror stories of driving the Amalfi Coast it really isn't that bad and it allows you the freedom to explore areas not accessible by bus and you are holiday is not dictated by bus schedules.
What time of year are you planning your trip, because with a car, parking will be difficult if not impossible in June-August as well as incredible traffic issues.

We have had rental cars for both visits to the AC - but we were there in late May. Great weather but not totally mobbed yet.
And our hotel in Sorrento had free parking - but very few hotels in AC have parking at all - so don't bring a car unless you have sorted out parking in advance.

Well we found driving the coast road to see Amalfi and Positano a lot of fun - but it was May - and we're not timid drivers. Not sure what would be more convenient - unless you stay IN one of the towns - and then getting to Pompeii, Naples and Capri is more difficult.
