I don't doubt Pal's story but I would agree that it's probably a rare occurrence; much more irritating are the dreadful "musicians" and their attendant beggars. I asked once why the children with them were not in school but got no sensible reply. Garibaldi station seemed a bit edgy but the worst thing to happen to us was the chap ahead of us getting almost run over on the zebra crossing outside the station.

It's interesting that the CV musos are so awful - as Naples has some incredible buskers probably due to its conservatorium of music being such a melting pot of talent. There is a guy on Via Toledo who plays the harp - it is sublime. Ever heard Lady Gaga's Poker Face played on the harp? Well he's often opposite the Gallerie di Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano.

It was about 8 years ago but the State Department warnings about theft on CV trains was much more recent - not sure of currently or not. And they may have been shooting up insulin for all I know - but as one person says there is a rather seedy element to some riders - not surprising in one of Europe's poorest areas.

Blueeyedcod - I will accept your more frequent and current riding of this train and not mention the thing I definitely did see - and by the looks of the two they were not shooting insulin - maybe it was a one-off - I've seen the same thing in Munich's main train station locker area - was shocked then by blatant public use but figure maybe there are laws for certified addicts.

and this train though seems to be crowded at times according to other reports so with lots of luggage maybe take a cab to the port or to Sorrento. Better yet packing light is in order for any train trip.
