Train Naples/Orvieto/Florence?

The plan is to go to Florence from Naples (spent 4 nites in Rome earlier in trip). Would it be possible/worthwhile to stop in Orvieto for a few hours, storing our bags at the train station? From the ts, how does one get to the Orvieto town.

I've been to Orvieto once before, but we were *driving from Rome. Don't know where ts is in relation to town center. I'd just love to show my friends and mom this quaint town this trip, if it's not too much hassle w/bags, etc.

Laura, I don't know about storing your bags at the station. Maybe someone else will address this. It's easy as pie to get from the station up to the city center. You just walk outside the station and hop on the funicular that whisks you up to the top. You can buy your ticket for the funicular in the station or at the base of the ride. At the top you can ride a little bus (free) into the main piazza, or you can walk through the streets easily. Be sure to stop by the gelateria on the left hand side of the duomo.

Why not spend the night in Orvieto? I'd suggest leaving Florence in the afternoon (cutting a night out of Florence), and giving you a few hours in Orvieto and a quiet, peaceful night in a cute town. I took the Orvieto-Naples-Sorrento train and it was a long day (left at 7am and didn't get to Sorrento until about 2). It would be even longer from Florence. I can recommend the Hotel Corso; cheap, close to the funicular.

From Naples, which train goes to Orvieto? We're now thinking of staying a night there, then catching a train to Florence in the morning.

Thanks, everyone!
