Assisi as a day trip from Florence?

Mrs Green and I are still in the process of filling out our Itinerary for Italy this October. We have booked a room in Florence for one week. We have no plans to rent a car during our trip.

My questions: Is Assisi a plausible day trip from Florence without a car? How much approximate time/money does it take to get to Assisi from Florence via train and/or bus? Is it a difficult undertaking?

I've been Googling for guided day trips to Assisi. I found several different companies offering tours, but they all seem to have exactly the same tour description and some even have all the same pictures!

I think they may all be related to the CAFtours??? But they are all different prices. Can anyone recommend a reputable, fair-priced tour company?

What are the thoughts of the Italy experts?
Thanks!

I would recommend taking one of the tours if you can find a good one. The train station is well below the old part of Assisi and it is an uphill climb and a long way. You could take a taxi up the hill or a bus which might be confusing, but I would vote for the convenience of a tour for a day trip.

It's a plausible daytrip, but you'll spend FIVE hours on the train (round trip), and spend 18 Euros for the train, plus 1.60 Euros for the round-trip bus from the Assisi Station to the Old Town (too far and too steep to walk). The local bus runs every 30 mins. and takes less than 10 mins.

Your best bet is to take the 10:09 train from Florence to Assisi (no seat reservations possible), then a late afternoon train back.

As an Italian that knows that area wery well my suggestion is to use the rental car and enjoy a very confortable ride. The trip is almost completely on highways and the surroundings are beautiful. Beside , not to be linked to a timetable gives the possibility to stop and admire a lot of special areas , lake Trasimeno and Perugia just to mention two of them.
