Train from Venice to Lake Como then to Pistoia?

Train from Venice to Lake Como then to Pistoia?
How long is the train ride from Venice to Lake Como and Como to Pistoia or Montecatini area? I was considering renting a car, but I am not sure it is worth it if we won't be using it much til we arrive in Tuscany. I looked at the drive from Como to Montecatini and it was over 5 hours. Perhaps it would be better to train to Milan and pick up a car there? I'm really wondering if it is worth squeezing in 2 nights in Como after being in rome 4, florence 2, and venice 2. However, there is a part of me that wants to see this region desperately especially since we will not have time for Capri or the Amalfi Coast.
