We did a similar trip and the train went to Genoa first then Milan then on to Venice. The train to Milan arrived about 15 mins late and the train to Venice had gone without us (and others too). We only had to wait about an hour for the next train and could still use our ticket but not our seat reservation.
You need to use the Italian spelling on www.trenitalia.com - e.g. Venezia Santa Lucia is the stop you want for Venice.

Thanks. What's the difference between 1st and 2nd class? Should we get 1st class reservations? It looks like we can get an EuroStar train from Venice to Milan (about 2 1/2 hrs) and then a regular train to Monterosso (for another 2 1/2 hrs).
