Train from Genoa to Cinque Terre/ then train from La Spezia to Foligno
We will be flying into Genoa around 11:00 am from an international flight and want to get to Cinque Terre that day. How difficult is it to get from there by train to Cinque Terre area, and how long would it take? We plan on spending three days in the area and then want to go to Umbria around Spello for three days. Should we rent the car in La Speza or train from La Speza to Foligino and pick up car there and head to Spello. We will end in Rome for 3 days droppping off car at airport or another easy location.

Hi Amy...the website for the train is:
http://www.trenitalia.com/en/trenitalia/index.html
It is approx 2 hours by train from Genoa to the CT..depending on the train (could be a little less). I think you would be looking at the train at approx 1pm getting in at 3pm.
From La Spezia to Foligno is a 5 hour train ride so you will kill the better part of the day. Driving would be about the same amount of time but perhaps you would like to stop along the way somewhere in Tuscany.
There is an Avis depot in Foligno and I would likely drop off the car there in any case. It is only a few hours on the train from there to Rome. That way you will already be in the city centre. We did that last May and were glad we did as driving around Rome is not much fun.
You'll love Spello, Assisi and the general area.
Enjoy your holiday

From Genoa airport take the 'volabus' shuttle to Genoa's Stazione Principe. It leaves every hour on the hour (ticket is 4 euro) and arrives at the station in 20 minutes. All the Cinque Terre villages have their own train station, so even if the train you are gojng to take will be going to La SPezia (or further on), you'll need to buy a ticket for one of the villages. I second previous poster's advice to also proceed by train all the way to Umbria.

I think you will want to pick up your car in La Spezia Checking the driving time from La Spezia to Foligno on via michelin, www.viamichelin.com ,shows only 3:21. Last May we took the train from Perugia to Lucca, and it took forever because the trains were local and stopped at practically every station.
You could also return your car in Spoleto, and take the train to Rome, a 1 1/2 hour trip.
Here is a sample schedule from La Spezia to Foligno. You have to switch trains twice, and as you can see, there are a lot of stops:

Hi Amy,
Regardless of where you pick up your rental car, I would recommend returning it to Foligno. The Avis office is IN the train station and the ride to Roma is about 1 hour 45 minutes.
Buon viaggio!
