PalenQ, we do plan on renting a bicycle (tandem if possible!) and scouting out the nearby towns. We have four nights in Riquewihr, so we will either walk or bike to nearby towns each day - like we did in Amboise last year!

We were actually wondering about renting a bike with baskets upon arrival by train in Cochem, then biking with our luggage to Riquewihr (picturing that and giggling - but hey we do our grocery shopping here in the US via bicycle!). But arrival is on a Sunday and I get the feeling nothing is open including velo rental...but Cochem has the most options bike-wise so this seems like a possibility...any thoughts?

Sounds great to me - I've biked along the Alsace Wine Road and it is a nice fairly calm route after you get out of Colmar, which is really a small town. You may pass by the copy of the Statue of Liberty on your way out!

The 6.43 train connection is just one among many others (and not the fastest, BTW).

right that train takes about 35 minutes longer than those that clock in a 5:00 exactly but those require multiple changes. Leave Colmer at 10:07 and be in cochem at 16:00 - not bad and more relaxed than an early reveille to get to the 6:43 train.

If you did not see Strasbourg that may be a place to go for the day before your trip to Cochem - amazing city often overlooked by many. Awesome place.
