Colmar France hotel? Taxi from train station?

We will be taking the train to Colmar from Basel in September. We will only be staying one night as must return to Basel to spend night close to airport for early a.m. Flight Will it be necessary to make our train reservations in advance? Are taxis available from station to hotel? Suggestion for hotel with local character. Thanks so much, this is my first try at this!

Can't help with taxi information…. but we stayed at Le Marechal…. which has lots of local
character. Some people find the rooms small…. but that's all part and parcel of the building.

Those are regional trains Basel to Colmar so just buy a ticket in Basel and you can use it on any train I think - no discounts on such a short cheap ride - at least any worth fooling around about. No reservations required nor needed IME - you can make a seat reservation for a few extra euros when buying your ticket - buy a round trip ticket so you need not have to buy one in Colmar for return.

For lots of great info on French trains check out these IMO superb sites: www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com. Those trains should rarely be crowded unless perhaps at rush hours as they are kind of like commuter trains.

Trains take all of 43 minutes and leave at least hourly if not more often. You have to validate your ticket before boarding on these type trains I believe.

If have a lot of luggage leave it in Basel station's locker or left luggage. First class is not that much more on those trains and is always much much less crowded IME on such trains plus seats are bigger and usually lots of empty seats to spread out on - put your baggage on a nearby empty seat, etc.
