Train connections in Munich

I'm looking at traveling from Salzburg to Frankfurt Airport by train. It looks like there are no direct trains so I will have to connect in Munich. It looks like the time in between connections is anywhere from 8 minutes to 25 minutes.

Does anyone know if this is cutting it too close? I'm not familiar with the Munich train station and want to make sure it is plenty of time.

Thank you!

Hi MommaV8808,

It depends on which track you'll be arriving on and which one you'll be departing on -- you can find this out using the DB site at

www.bahn.de

It also depends on how much luggage you'll be lugging and how easily you can maneuver with it.

Without knowing that specific information, I can say that I personally would not be comfortable with only eight minutes. Trains in Germany can be five or six minutes late, and then you'll miss the connection. You can always prepare yourself by finding out the next available connection to see how long the wait might be.

I am more comfortable with connections around 15 minutes.

Have fun!

Sorry --

Should also say that Munich's station is a terminus station, meaning that all trains arrive to a concrete barrier and must reverse out of it. That means there are no stairs for moving between platforms (you just walk down the track until you get to the main aisle at the front of the train).

Munich central station is a terminus.
The tracks end there, and there is no connecting tunnel between the platforms. This means that you walk along the train to the main hall and then down another platform for the train/car to Frankfurt. Depending on where you sit in the train from Salzburg, it can be quite a walk.
15 minutes would be okay. 8 minutes not really.
The above is only true for long-distance trains from Salzburg (which are the norm when you make a search for connections to Frankfurt). But if your train from Salzburg is labeled "RE" or "RB" it will be a regional train. Those terminate in wing of Munich central which requires at least 5mins more walking.

In case you get saver fares that restrict you to certain trains:
If the train from Salzburg is late and you miss the connection to Frankfurt, don't just board the next train. First, stop at the central information point in the main hall to get your restricted ticket validated for the next train.

If you have your luggage at the door and exit the train immediately it stops, walk briskly to the departure hall and then down the platform the new train is at you should be able to do it fairly quickly. (But IMHO I wouldn't be happy with less than 20 minutes - since trains can be 10 minutes late anywhere.)

It will be better if you can easily pick up and carry your luggage - so you can move more quickly than hauling it behind you.

Be aware than some trains are accessed by 3 steep narrow steps up which you need to be able to carry your luggage. If this will be an issue - consider packing lighter.
