SUSAN,

" It would be fun to meet up! I'm looking at early Oct. 2016 and will let you know later on." Sounds good.

I found your email address from our past correspondence about traveling in France- that was a few years back...

Lateday -- if that's the gmail address, it's still current. If it ends in .me or .mac, that one works too. Let's stay in touch.

Wonderful report, lateday. Just now finding this. You'd be fun to trail along behind. Your TRs are so fun and, bonus, helpful for future travelers.

"more accessible than Ulysses" = approaching my access range. I was delighted to see "Ulysses Seen" in one of your links, since a comic book version might be up my alley. My most recent attempt was in sympathy when our younger daughter read it for a college class; I thought that knowing the Odyssey ties would make it easier. I struggled for a couple of weeks and then flipped to the Molly soliloquy. Finally something I could understand. I like to think that Marilyn Monroe also skipped to the good part:

Hi STOKE,

Thanks for your kind words. It really was a fabulous week. The "Joyce people" were fun to be with too. Most knew more, but some less about Joyce than I do.

As I mentioned above, I had watched the old 1960s movie of ULYSSES, read an outline in Sparknotes, and listened on CD - to the 22 discs! It's ok to skip any part since the plot is episodic. The language is delicious though.

Where have you been/ or are going these days? I always enjoy reading about you and your family adventures - you folks do a great deal of walking if I recall...

STOKE, just saw that Marilyn Monroe link - LOL. That must have been when she was married to Arthur Miller...

Hi latedaytraveler

This will be my first trip to Ireland. I will probably arrive Thursday early afternoon from Paris and leave for NYC Tuesday morning.

Hopefully I can find a day tour or even an overnight tour to the Irish countryside. If not I am sure there will be enough to keep me interstated in Dublin

I loved the looks of the BUSWELL HOTEL and booked my room.

Since my husband died 10 years ago, I mostly travel alone and if my health continues to be good, my 6 week trip is set for next year.
I will be celebrating my 86th birthday while in Paris .I have been fortunate to celebrate my last 7 birthdays in Paris and it is a tradition I would like to continue as long as possible.
If you think or anything else I would appreciate the info

Again thanks

Hi TDK320N,

"I have been fortunate to celebrate my last 7 birthdays in Paris and it is a tradition I would like to continue as long as possible." Good for you! Just wondering, where do you stay in Paris?

Have you googled day tours from Dublin? There are so many. Have you been to Ireland before? Personally I would not choose to do an overnight tour since you are only staying for four days in the city.

Dublin offers great theater and performance if you are interested. Great shopping too, I guess - not my forte.

I thought the areas north (Howth) and south (Dalkey and Dunleary) of Dublin Bay were beautiful. There are tons of private drivers available in the city. I am sure that Buswells could recommend one if you wanted to take an excursion.

You know that Dublin is not Paris - but the people are delightful - that's the best part.

I hope you make a report on your adventures in Dublin...

tdk, I wish you many more birthdays in Paris.

Hi, thanks, lateday. We just had both of our girls home together for a few days, far too rare anymore. We gaze at them sadly as we drive to the airport, then tell them to come visit when they can stay awhile.

Our youngest goes to London this week for a year postgrad, so I'm starting to think about a Spring trip there, with a bonus excursion to maybe Spain or France. Lots of walking for sure if at all possible.

What and where is she studying?

HI, lateday, and you are kind to ask. Our girl's in flight now, due LHR by 1000.

She's starting a 12 month master's in international development economics (unless I have those words in the wrong order) at King's College London, just next to Somerset House on the Strand, and excited for a chance to study there.

I happened to watch a 1972 Columbo episode tonight on Netflix, where he goes to London for a week and in spare time solves a murder. Was struck by how smoggy the air was then, compared to now.

I'll let her settle in before I decide when ask for vacation time.

What's your next travel plan? And right back at you about your fun trip reports!

"I regret to say that I have seen much more of Europe than the US - my bad, haven't even been to California.Just got as far as New Mexico and the Grand Canyon. Hey, no one can do it all, eh?

What about yourself?"

DH and I got so stuck in Italy that the same statement was true for us. We were planning Miami and the Keys when he got his diagnosis. We had visited New York City and San Francisco. Las Vegas and New Orleans with his folks earlier in our marriage but that was it. I haven't seen the Grand Canyon.

In the US, I've managed NYC, Boston and Austin since the fates dispatched DH. Amsterdam and St. Petersburg are on the list but France is calling out--I wanted to visit StCirq and Runningtab but got distracted with Boston. London for me also as I missed Sargent's murals in the War Museum. Darn it! As you say, not enough time!

Stokebailey, the wonderful Courtauld Gallery is right there (a part of Somerset House--can't remember). Get thee to it if possible!

Hi STOKE,

Wow, "She's starting a 12 month master's in international development economics (unless I have those words in the wrong order) at King's College London, just next to Somerset House on the Strand, and excited for a chance to study there."

Congratulations to DD. What a location and such an opportunity. And great for Mom to visit...

TDUDETTE,

You have seen more of the US than I have. Plans? Guess? I am returning to London for eight days in June. Family obligations confine me to shorter trips these days. I mentioned this before on other posts, but I hope to be there for the TROOPING OF THE COLOR - the Queen's 90th birthday. Just another face in the crowd. Also want to venture to Chartwell ( by train and cab) and perhaps to Cambridge. I am getting more adventuresome on London transportation.

I keep looking at different hotels but will probably end up again at the STRAND PALACE for price and convenience. I have stayed in many other part of the city, but prefer the Trafalgar Square area.

I hope you make it to France. Have you considered staying in NICE? Such wonderful museums, good public transportation (from what I have read on this forum), and beautiful Med scenery. To me it is a perfect destination for an art lover like yourself.

Looking forward to future trip reports by you both...

Trooping of the Colour sounds like yet another fun adventure, lateday. We'll look forward to hearing about it.

Have you read Boris Johnson's Churchill Factor? (Forgive me if I've mentioned this before.) He nails an enthusiastic case for Churchill as western civilization's hero of the 20th Century.

Thanks, TD. Good reminder. It's been several years since I've been to the Courtauld, and I do hope to visit maybe late spring. My first trip to London with my mother I went to the Courtauld when its windows overlooked some leafy square.

Hi STOKE,

"Have you read Boris Johnson's Churchill Factor?" Not yet, but I have caught clips of Boris discussing the book on Youtube. Thanks for the suggestion.

A few years back, I read Boris's JOHNSON'S LIFE OF LONDON, The People Who Made the City That Made the World. When I went to London in 2014, I attended his State of London address - huge audience.

One person asked, "Boris, how do you have time to write books and your newspaper column?" Reply, "Disraeli and Winston Churchill did it, didn't they?" (You gotta love this guy.) He also mentioned in another interview that he does not watch TV, thus he has time for writing.

Another place I plan to visit is his bailiwick, the new London City Hall on the Southbank, an ovoid shaped modern edifice described by one pundit as a "glass testicle."

Loved this trip report! Having been dragged to Philadelphia twice by my Mom as a kid for Bloomsday at the Rosenbach some years ago, this was a great read and chock full of information. Your literary pub crawl sounded great, as did just about everything. Thanks for sharing!

Hi BOSTONBLONDIE,

Thanks for plowing through this lengthy report.

"Having been dragged to Philadelphia twice by my Mom as a kid for Bloomsday at the Rosenbach some years ago ..." Just curious, what is the Rosenbach?

Bloomsday is celebrated in a variety of ways throughout the world.

This trip was special because of my participation in events sponsored by the JAMES JOYCE CENTER, the great weather, a wonderful hotel, and the people, the people, the people...

Hi Latedaytraveler,

I knew if I looked around enough I would find your Trip Report. I read it a while back but I had decided to go to Amsterdam. Then...changed my mind again. I need my literary fix and I think Ireland will do that and it is what I need right now.

So you had given me some excellent advice and inspiration for my trips to London and Paris. Do you have any more advice (I have read your report and took notes!). I look forward to the literary tours.

Thanks again for taking the time to write such good notes.
