Sorry in advance if I've posted this once already.

Received a lot of help on this forum about where to stay in Normandy, etc. Still need to know if I should do my research before the trip, rent a car, and then do the tour ourselves of the D-Day sights or do my research before the trip and then hire a guide. If I hire, such as BattleBus or Michael Chilcott, any suggestions?

We didn't feel like we missed out visiting these areas (Ste. Mere Eglise, Pointe du Hoc, the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-mer overlooking Omaha Beach and Arromanches) on our own, in September of 2002 - - so I will defer to others to advise you on guided tour options available in the area.

Since you are new here (you indicate this by the opening sentence - - and easy to see when you "click on your own name" - - the undocumented tip that Fodor's fails to tell new registrants when they first post here), I assume that you may have had trouble locating your earlier post. Sorry, no advice, except to always double check you title before posting. We all make lots of typos (or at least I do) but I clicked on this one just to find out what "On Your Own" was and how or where you do a tour of it.

We were in Mormandy 2 yrs ago in late March. We rented our car in Paris and drove throughout the area and saw the beaches, etc. I can't see any reason to use a guide or join a tour.
