Top European Airport?

The last few times I've had to change at Schiphol I've hated it, because you have to go through security right at the individual gate and there's always a huge long backup with people pushing and shoving. I don't remember it being like that it in the past.

Glad you asked, Sid.

Having been to Europe eight or nine times during the past three years, I've had occasion to pass through quite a few airports, and although I very much love Europe, European airports, by and large, are downright ugly. Yes, Schiphol is okay. But beautiful? I don't think so. And last month I spent a great deal of time at CDG Paris, and it has no more beauty than a parking garage in the Bronx. American airports like MCO (Orlando) or HNL (Honolulu) are much more attractive.

Gerry K

Another vote for Schiphol, though Tegel in Berlin might be a close second with its unique layout as well as Kastrop. Both of these, however, are relatively small and more easily managed. None, however can compare to the airports in Hong Kong, Osaka, and Singapore - including my home airport in Orlando.

My vote is for Orio al Serio airport in Bergamo, Italy. It is just about as close to Milan and Malpensa, and gets some low-cost airlines flying to it. It is small, uncrowded, and I love the name. You can't fly there from the US, but if coming from closer in, you may want to check it out.

My vote goes for the new terminal A at Brussels airport. By far, the most up to date terminal in Europe. Unfortunately, the rest of the airport isn't up to the same standard.
Overall, I like Vienna's airport best. Easy to navigate, good wine bar, and free small carts to to hold carry-ons, coats, etc.
BTilke (Brussels)

As with most things, "top" airport is in the eye of the beholder. One might prefer visual beauty, another might like shops and restaurants, another might want best security, another might like smaller size and easier to navigate.

No airport can be ranked at the top in all these types of categories. And though Schipol is pretty good, my vote for overall best, keeping to the larger cities and including access to and from terminals, would be a tie between Vienna and Zurich.

My favorites:

1. Hamburg
2. Oslo (beautiful, but far from town)

Regarding other airports in this thread:
- Schiphol: used to be great, but now it's HUGE.

- Coppenhagen: haven't been to the new airport.

- Vienna: small and good shopping, but hardly any seating areas if the gate's not open yet.

- Zurich: Terminal A (Swiss) is good, but B is terrible, especially the temporary gates in a sort of tent at ground level (this is scheduled to last another year).

- Brussels is OK - only used it once and had quite a hike from the gate to immigration.

Andre
