ekscrunchy, yes, the pronunciation of "eejit" is pretty obvious. Did you recognise that it is an Irish variant of "idiot"?
Christina, other than adjusting to reflect current prices, why discard an established understanding of what a pourboire is? It is in line with what I know of French tipping practices -- and is at least a good reference point to start your thinking. Have you a better idea?

I've certainly enjoyed reading all the "responses" to my original question as to how much to tip. Learned a thing or two - and had a good laugh from oneillchris - but I'd still like to know, in a 3 star hotel how many euros would I tip someone who brings an ironing board & iron to my room at my request.
