ekscrunchy, yes, the pronunciation of "eejit" is pretty obvious. Did you recognise that it is an Irish variant of "idiot"?

Christina, other than adjusting to reflect current prices, why discard an established understanding of what a pourboire is? It is in line with what I know of French tipping practices -- and is at least a good reference point to start your thinking. Have you a better idea?

Padraig-
This is really off topic, I was wondering if you could give a phonetic pronnunciation of "O h-Ailgheanain"?

If a pourboire is to be the equivalent of the price of a drink, how much of a pourboire do you leave when you just order a drink?

laurwarr,
O HAL-an-AWN. It's a name generally rendered in English as Hallinan or O'Hallinan.

Thank you. My name is Hallinan. I recently discovered that it appears as Hallinane in Irish church records and on the ship manifest, 1883, when the came to US.

I've certainly enjoyed reading all the "responses" to my original question as to how much to tip. Learned a thing or two - and had a good laugh from oneillchris - but I'd still like to know, in a 3 star hotel how many euros would I tip someone who brings an ironing board & iron to my room at my request.
Thanks, hopefully,for an answer.

suzy, I suggested 2 or 3 euros, and nobody has disagreed -- yet.
