My recollection is that the Alhambra started as a fortress that was fought over by various Islamic groups, and what stood out for me was a poem which included the phrase 'mischievous councils.' I have always wondered, what mischief. As a kid I had only playful interpretations of that word but I don't think that's what the poem's authors had in mind.
Anyway at some point a sultan, in flight from Ferdinand of Castile, takes the fortress over and creates among other things the beautiful gardens complete with irrigation system. It becomes known as a residence more than a fortress, although I suppose it could be seen as a fortified house. Of course once 1492 happens the whole place reopens under new management, who operate from the school of We Want to Make A Point architecture. Stuff whitewashed over, for example. (I think that was why menachem raised the subject of the Al Hambra in the context of the Hagia Sophia whitewashing).
The thing is, it would be a pity for the world's historic art if everything dissolves into a you-did-it-to-us-first-no-it-was-you debacle. Especially since so much effort has now been expended to preserve the past and leave the judging to the spectators.

As long as they preserve the artwork, it really does not matter to me if it's a mosque or a church.
I'll wear a headscarf and take my shoes off if needed. Some catholic churches also ask for modest dress.
