Go there on your third day. See all the major sights in Prague, first. If you want souvenirs, C K has some nice ones. You can see the castle there, go shopping, and have some good meals. When you get back to Prague, you can go shopping for anything else you want, and take an extra walk across the bridge, one last look at Old Town, etc. I think 4 days will be a good trip. Of course, we have no idea which days you'll be there, so you may have to plan around museum times, etc, if you are interested in those.

I was in Prague recently. I think there is enough to see and do there for at least a week. You won't be bored. You can cover most of the major sites in 4 days but you need to rush a bit in 3 days. I ended up extending my stay from 4 days to 7 days but I am a slow traveller. You can always skip something in Prague. Unfortunately, I did not go to Cesky Krumloff so I cannot compare if it is worth missing sites in Prague for Cesky Krumloff.

hey hey, just got back from prague and did a trip to cesky Krumlov too
i could do a week in prague, seriously but 3 days in praha and one day in Krumlov is very ok.
personal advice is to do most of your souvie shopping in CK but then give yourself enough time to come back to praha to pick up waht you couldn't find in CK.
the main question is "do i join a tour?"
well depends if you want to have all the history and all the stories behind things and if you found tours value for money before.
tours to CK are mainly offered by two companies for about KC 1400-1900. i have to check my flyers so if you want that detail i can get back to you on it but i think the days are tues, thurs, fri and sun you'll be gone for about 10 hours or so of which about 4 hours is actually sightseeing but you'll still be back in time to do some extra shopping in praha.
on the other hand catching a bus is a very good idea. you can leave like sparrow time in the morning and get back whenever it suits you and again, still be back in time to do more shopping in praha. The bus costs between Kc 125 and 140 depending on where you leave from. Caution, in summer best to book at least a day ahead but the cheaper, quicker bus is less popular because of where it leaves from.
i actually stayed overnight at a B&B (pension), didn't have to book ahead of time and was very cheap and very nice. I can't see the need to go to a hotel in CK. i enjoyed being able to take night photos and have a local (cheap) meal. I fully recommend that experience and then leave back to praha in the morning so you can do some shopping before leaving to your next destination. ON that note i put my suitcase in storage at praha for KC 60 and took an overnight bag to CK. this was very convenient and allowed me to do all my sightseeing and shopping relaxed and then picked up the suitcase just prior to leaving praha.
anything else you want to know just ask.
elaine is a wealth of help for prague and i also concur that you can decide on that after you get to praha if you want...just go with it
