Thistle Kensington Park:Convenience re Tube and Padd. Sta?
Hi
I'm still dithering for a hotel room for a short, budget-minded visit to London in early January. I booked the Morgan in Bloomsbury, an often-praised modest hotel, convenient location, GBP 75 per night.
Now I've found that I could get a "superior" room at the Thistle Kensington Park hotel, located DeVere Gardens, for only GBP 50 per night, tax and breakfast included.
On a 4 night budget stay, this is significant, though otherwise I prefer the Bloomsbury location.
Any recent experiences at the hotel? I've done the searches.
Also, if I go from H'row to Paddington Station, is it then a straight Tube run to Kensington High Street, and is that the best Tube stop? I can't find my Tube map at the moment.

Over the summer I stayed at the Thistle Kensington Palace--right next door to the Thistle Kensington Park--so I can comment on the distance to the tube. I thought it was a fairly quick walk to the Kensington High St. Station, though probably about 5 blocks. The Gloucester Rd. tube stop is longer (probably a 15 minute walk) but Gloucester Rd. is a nice walk with shops, restaurants, and residences. I really liked the neighborhood of the TKP.
If you want to go to or from Paddington Station it's a simple ride on the Circle and District lines (no changing lines involved).

Elaine,
Why are you headed to Paddington from Heathrow? Heathrow Express? The budget minded trip would be the tube from Heathrow via the Piccadilly line to Gloucester Rd. Way cheaper. Not faster perhaps but if you are arriving o'dark thirty from the US, what's the rush?
Just looked at the Thistle website and see that they direct you to Paddington. Hmmm. Still. if you're travelling lightish and are reasonably able bodied, I don't see why you'd do the HE upon arrival. Maybe for departure if time was a more critical factor.
Like you I prefer Bloomsbury as a London stay. Can't argue with your economics, however, given the current state of the US dollar.

I like the Thistle Kensington Park Hotel, but this is my least favorite of the places I've stayed in several visits to London because it is not convenient to the Tube. The Kensington High Street stop is the nearest and it is closer to 8-10 blocks than the 5 that was earlier mentioned. I prefer to stay a shorter distance from the Tube - that last trip to the hotel in the evening seemed to get longer and longer as time progressed, especially if it was raining!
However, if that would not be an issue with you, you should certainly try it. The hotel is great - especially at that price.

I agree that use of Paddington adds to distance, walking, and cost. I should take the Piccadilly line to Hammersmith, cross the platform, take the District line to South Kensington, cross the platform, and the Circle line to High Street Kensington. Walk to the High Street, cross the road, and there are bus stops: I should take any bus marked for Knightsbridge.

I usually take umbrage when a sentence begins with the phrase "You people..." because it is usually followed by a negative statement.
But on this forum, You People are marvelous!
Mr Haines shares his valued expertise on the intricacies of the Tube and bus system, but following my plane trip I hesitate to be hauling even my small bag from the airport to the Tube to the bus and then still walk. I am a bit of a bus-a-phobe anyway; I'd prefer to do experimenting (from my perspective) when I don't have a suitcase and when I've had more sleep. I travel lighter than I used to, but not really light by spartan traveler standards--my suitcase will be small, but doubtlessly weighty, even for just 4 days.
One way or another, it sounds remarkably straightforward. I'll report back afterwards on the hotel and on the transport. I've booked the K Park, and very reluctantly canceled the Morgan. Saving 100 pounds is not to be sneezed at this time.
Oh d-n, and I really wanted to try staying in Bloomsbury this time. Next time, for me there's always a next time in London.
Happy Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and Happy New Year.
