Theatre in London

I will be in London during the first weekend of June. I would appreciate recommendations for the best theatre and show to see. Also, restaurants nearby would be great. Thanks!

There are so many shows on in London it is hard to say what is best - depends on your interests? Musical, non-musical, comedy etc?

You can see alot of whats on here: http://www.tkts.co.uk/

Once you pick your show you can ask about restaurants near that particular theatre.

There is no one best theatre either

Thank you for your quick reply! A friend recommended 39 Steps at the Criterion and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. I am really looking for something genuinely "British" in a landmark theatre.

And several new shows are opening in the next couple of months so it is best to wait to see the reviews closer to your dates.

here is another good site for getting theatre info. http://www.londontheatre.co.uk/

Rewatch the movie The 39 Steps before going. It'll get you in the mood.

Here's a couple of sources for all things London.

One of the best shows you can see is "Wicked" which is on at the Apollo theatre beside Victoria station. It is really excellent and convenient to get to. My wife and I saw it recently and thoroughly enjoyed it. The other one that might tickle your fancy is Agatha Christie's "The Mousetrap" It is nearing its 25000 performance and would be an interesting experience for you. After that number of shows, it has to be good!

Think about Blood Brothers, too--very British.

39 Steps is very "British," I think, and at the Criterion Theatre - not sure if that qualifies as "landmark" but it's a great experience. Mousetrap is fun too. Wicked is fantastic, but if you're going for something specifically British, I'd steer clear of the mega-musicals. (I'm one of the few people who didn't enjoy Blood Brothers, I think! But it's been running for years so a lot of people do.)

Does anyone have an opinion or know anything about The Kings Speech? It's opening in time for June. I thought it would be a great British play to see.

It opens in London in June but it's been touring the "provinces" since February

LHarbar: The King's Speech just posted early closing notices for May 12 (it opened in London in March and was originally booking through late July)
