Angela, I'm European too, and while in Disneyworld I wore sneakers and shorts, in New York I don't. It's no different in Europe.

hanl, if you're going to LA, you won't need the scarf. I wore one of my favorite French scarves to LACMA one day and several total strangers stopped me to tell me how delightful it looked. (I'm sixty-something and was with my husband so they weren't hitting on me!)

Come to think of it, wear the scarf, you may meet some very nice people.
