The Montague Hotel

I am going to be in London for five nights with my parents in just a few weeks . They are getting on and like to be close to nice pubs and eateries - very short walking distance, especially considering the time of year. There will, of course be some sightseeing, but all by cab I imagine. Is the Montague a good choice for a hotel? Any help on this will be welcome. We don't want Mayfair fancy, but are able to spend up to 200GBP or so per night.

It's a lovely hotel if you really want to spend that much money. WHat is getting on? We are 70 and have no trouble with buses and the tube. We are booked into Millenium Baileys, directly across from Gloucester Rd tube for 89 GBP a night. The tube will take us anywhere we want to go or I know the bus routes, which I prefer, so no problem with them either.

If you really want ot spend that much money then fine, go for it. I'd prefer to spend on dining , theatre and other things.

What the hell does " getting on " mean?

That's a good location. If your parents have difficulty walking, you should focus on using buses solely, which will be far cheaper than cabs. All the London buses are "kneeling" buses, ie, the front entrance can be lowered so that it's almost level with the curb. I'd choose buses over taking the tube.

The hotel is a block from Gower Street, which has lots and lots of buses going south.

When are you going? At this very minute the road outside the British Museum (Great Russell Street) is up and the pavements and road are being worked on not due to be finished until c. mid-March. The reason I mention it is that the very useful no. 7 bus cannot pursue its normal route and I haven't found out from the TfL website what alternatives are proposed. Taxis can work round the road works as they were doing today.

Thank you for the responses. I especially appreciate the road work advice. No insult intended to anyone - by "getting on" I meant that my parents are 90, still going strong, just a little slower.

You might want to post your query on Travellers to Go as there is a moderator there who uses this hotel an awfulo lot (she raves about it).
