"So to me this is a very sad and significant blow."
That's all right, but you do agree it's not horrible, don't you. English has such a wonderfully rich vocabulary you can always find an appropriate word. ;-)

Well, I'm not a native English speaker, perhaps I don't properly understand the meaning of horrible. May this heist be the most horrible thing to befall Dresden.

A lot of things that Hungarians are up to these days are pretty horrible IMO, too.

"The valuables housed in the Green Vault and Residenzschloss were ACQUIRED by people in the Saxony Free State with DIFFICULTY, over many centuries," He said the collection was an integral part of Saxony's history.

This is not a robbery, it is just another example of the European method of "acquisition"
The Acquirers probably had a list provided by some who wanted to reclaim parts of their "integral" history.

I could believe that if it weren’t jewels. Take them out of their settings, melt down the metals, and then profit. If the motivation was to reclaim artifacts, I might even cheer ‘em on. There are a lot of pieces in european museums that don’t belong there. Perhaps it’s fortunate that those institutions salvaged those items, but they still don’t belong there.
It is a horrible shame. A loss of irreplaceable history.

I"m surprised the Green Vault wasn't more secure, that's the part that amazes me.
As for how they will fence these, I read some article once about this type of thing (I think, the details are fuzzy), and apparently there are some art collectors with tons of bucks who will buy stolen treasures, just to have them in their house or collection or something. I guess the black market knows about these type of people. But otherwise, for the jewels, they can be cut up, that was mentioned on the news as to what would make them untraceable.

Thanks to everyone who expressed their sympathy. There is still no other topic in the city it seems, total strangers start talking about this in the tram, the line at check out in the grocery etc.
The Historic Green Vault will remain closed for a while but the rest of the Royal Palace (including the New Green Vault) will re-open tomorrow, Wednesday.

Thanks for keeping us updated, Ingo. I'm sure the news is still sinking in....
