Standard UK bed sizes are as follows:
2'6 [two foot 6 inches] - a thin single as supplied to students in halls of residence, or on some bunk-beds.
3' - a single, or one half or a twin.
4' - a small double. [only found very rarely].
4'6 - a standard double. most UK married folks sleep on one of these. [It's not that we're more friendly than in the US, our rooms are smaller].
5' - what you call a queen size.
6' - a king-size, or two twins, zipped together if you're lucky.
Hope that helps!

We will see what we get in Salzburg. I just went through my paperwork and I hadn't noticed before that we have 2 "real" (?) beds and 3 rollaway beds. I don't have any idea what this means, other than I won't be completely surprised at whatever we get! At least these are in 2 rooms - the family suite. Seems to me that in 2 rooms, there should be a few more "real" beds. I booked for 5 people, but should maybe have paid more attention to the details in the confirmation. The 2 12 year olds should be fine with anything, but my 17 year old son... he might be in for a bit of a shock . Stay tuned for the trip report!!!

a regular French double bed is 140 cm, definitely not 110. That is just about the exact same size as in the US. A queen is 160. I think I've seen all small single b ed sizes from 90 to 120 in France, at least advertised for sale at mattress places. The term French bed which travelnut refers to is not a term used in France but in other countries like Germany and it can mean about any size there but refers to the configuration of one large mattress, not two twins stuck together.
