Official rules:

1) Don't take yourself so seriously.
2) If someone's humor offends you take a bathroom break.
3) No preaching. Leave it to the experts.
4) No Etiquette. You can use your fingers and burp.

Rex.
When someone was recently cruel and nasty to me (online) and my feelings were hurt, I was told by more than one person (family & real friends)that the nasty person was not family, not a real friend, it is only the internet.
You could be a dog catcher and I could be a policewoman..we can be whatever we like and behave however we like, it is only the internet.
But you and I, like most people here, (with the exception of a few nasties we all know) pretend to be much more than they are or just indulge themselves being ugly because they can-it is only the internet.
But that said, I still try not to be mean and keep my sense of humor (vitreous and aqueous)~

Hi horizon,

Unfortunately, some people believe that the internet should be an incohate, anarchic mess suject ot no rules at all.

I suggest that the rules for participating on this site should be the same as if you were in a cafe and pub speaking to people. (some of whom might be carrying weapons)

I would like to clarify my posting which got all garbled for some reason ( sinus meds I bet!)
In less words:
I meant that most people here are genuine and nice with the exception of a few and that we should enjoy those people and ignore the others..and not be hurt or insulted by strangers over the internet.
I hope that sounds better than my first try

Not everyone can be like Ira or Marilyn, but why do they have to be like the Jerk, that was annoyed that I asked the same question two times? He came back caustically annoyed that I had not clicked on a certain site, not knowing that my Web-tv did not not have the capacity to access, what he had suggested.
He could have just skipped my post, if it was such a great annoyance to hiem. (yes, I'm sure he was a "guy", a neglected one at that.)
Thanks for "listening".

this is useful, helpful, interesting, entertaining, and obviously a subject that needed to be "aired."

I have not used this Fodors site for very long but I am compelled to respond to this issue. I returned from Italy a few weeks ago. I had tried every search engine to find out more about my destination before I left with limited success. It was only when I started using this site that I was able to put together my trip. Some of the posters in this thread took the time to help me out. I was also called a "troll" and treated shabbily by others (they are not in this particular thread). The petty attacks on poster's punctuation and grammar seemed so mean spirited. In the name of humor I saw posters say things that would never be said to someone's face. It is really sad that such an informative site is subjected to that bitterness.

It's been awhile since I've read the FAQ. Either they added the part of about "parodies and salacious humor" being off limits, or my mind is has worked loose after spending too many hours concocting slightly modified lyrics to the old "Venus If You Will" song.

to horizon: Ahh, just jump in. There is a huge resource of travel specific info to be found. Also some interesting conversations develop re: packing, budget travel, specific destinations, women solo, etc. Sometimes it gets off-topic but it's always fun. Join us!

Hello horizon, and welcome!

You started this "thread", which is entitled "The Etiquette of this Site??"

It is very kind and polite of you to inquire about posting etiquette. The fact that you have the manners to ask such a question leads me to believe that you'll have no problem at all. It's just on-line "conversation", subject to common courtesies and common sense.

Just as in all aspects of life, you'll run into some people here who may not agree with you, and some express their disagreement with more vitriole than others. If you spend enough time here, you'll learn to identify certain personalities; who is witty, who is patient, who is wise, who is a wise@$$, and who is to be ignored.

Overall, the site provides a wealth of information, and has the potential to be fun. Stick around a while!

i will stick around. absolutely. i have a trip to france at the end of august, and while i know my way around i'm always open to new ideas. also $$$ are so much more precious now. for two weeks we're in vence and then in paris for only two nights. my friends' are bringing their 12 yr old son to paris for the first time. it will be my 12 yr old son's third visit. a lot of needs to be met with harmony in short period of time, beginning with finding the hotel that suits all of us.
i first asked the question about etiquette because i was struck by the entries regarding meanness in an earlier message. i wondered what i'd got myself into.

I agree with you. It is amazing what some people feel license to say here. Sometimes they're just rude people, sometimes they've been here too long and feel proprietary, some just having a bad day. It waxes and wains.

Welcome, horizon. I stumbled on this site about 2 years ago and have become a total addict. I've even met a few fellow fodorites in person and made lots of new friends.

As suze said, it's always fun. And yes, sometimes some people are mean, but that's life, isn't it? For every nasty remark on here there are a thousand helpful posts. It is a wonderful community -- you'll see.

horizon -- and it seems that only on Fodor's can you go from coffee to US bashing in one thread. Some people on this site thrive on confrontational behavior.

What people are capable of voicing in a public forum, from the safety of their own little keyboards, is surprising, but people can only surprise you for so long. After awhile it is down-right disheartening.

Welcome Horizon. Good of you to ask about etiquette as it certainly seems to be lacking just about everywhere these days. My suggestions:

Be polite
Don't take offense
Don't hesitate to ask questions
Ignore the nastiness
Keep your sense of humor
Thank the truly helpful contributors
Enjoy the talent of our imaginative and witty contributors (Degas, Thingorgous and Neil from Oz come to mind)
Report back on your adventures, so we can all enjoy your trip!

And last, but by no means least; please don't use all caps as it tends to drive many of us crazy.

Enjoy!
