Try Odor Away Scented Disks. I buy them at Target for $2.49 a pair. Small, lightweight, plastic balls. You'll find them in the shoe section with shoe polish/shoe laces. Have been using them for years and they really work. On the back of the package they note, "...specially designed to keep all your shoes and boots smelling clean and fresh."

My daughter is the manager of a specialty running shoe store. The expert says: the stinky smell is caused by dead skin cells left in your shoes which grow --bacteria, germs? So anything that kills germs such as an antibacterial should work (lysol?).
There is actually a product made called Stinky Pinkies that you put in your shoes overnight to eleminate the problem. Her store is located in Los Gatos, California - The Runners Factory.
My son's Tevas used to stink to high heaven and there is a special wash made for them. We would put them in a bucket of water with the soap, soak, scrub with a brush. Again, the culprit was dead skin cells which accumulate in the shoe. Wonder if this wash might work on your sandals. That you can probably get anywhere they sell Tevas.

I also have this problem with Birkenstock sandals because I'm not wearing socks -- and I wear them so often. I often open them up and scrub with a brush and hot, sudsy water. That is a short-term remedy. (very short term) Tonight, the grey ones are going in the washer!
I don't have this problem with shoes worn with socks.

I joined Foder's to join this conversation. I have a pair of Ecco's ($120) that stink up my whole motorhome! Thanks so much for your suggestions. I'm sure the antibacterial idea is the best. One friend told me washing them ruined hers but I may resort to that. Thing is, I don't have any other shoes that smell!

This may be an old posting but I can't resist putting my cure forward for others with the same problem. When my son was at high school his sports shoes were on a par with Roquefort or Stilton cheese! I got this tip from one of the other mums.
Put the shoes in a paper bag and through them into the deep freeze for a week. When thawed out they should smell a lot better.

Degas was right about packing the shoes in fish fat and lighting them on fire. This is an Ecco shoe problem not a stinky feet problem. After a few days in the trunk of my car after a round of golf, the entire car stank like a Paris sewer. It took days to get rid of it. I stuck the shoes in hot, hot soapy water for an hour, rinsed them out, dried them and THEY STILL SMELLED AWFUL. Sorry for shouting. But there's something wrong with these insoles. These are great shoes except for that. (My cat wouldn't get near the shoes, even wrapped in fish fat).

Sprinkle baking soda liberally into the shoes and leave them to sit overnight. The baking soda works to absorb odors. If you don't want to deal with cleaning up the baking soda, pour it into a couple of clean socks and stuff the socks into the shoes. never put damp shoes in a closet, that's when mold will grow. after the baking soda time is up. put them under the sun. If they have rubber soles and fabric, the washing machine should do it.

I bought a great leather Coach purse at a thrift store that reeked of cigarette smoke. I filled it with kitty litter (clean, of course!), let it set in the garage for a week. Dumped out the kitty litter, vacuumed out the fine dust, and the stench was gone. It very well may work for stinky shoes.
