It breaks my heart thinking what the poor little thing must have gone through.

Thanks Dave, that story reminds me of a bitter sweet children's book.

(by the way, not bad! also Liz Taylor as Maggie was much much better!)

Dave - Thank you for sharing the article with us. I can't help but think that they should have been more responsible cat owners. Dogs don't roam freely, why should cats? I have two of my own that I keep indoors and they are happy cats. They are saved from being hit by cars, being poisoned, being killed by coyotes.

On occasion I will let them outdoors but I stay with them in the backyard that has high walls all the way around. Never, ever unattended. It's not fair to the animal.

Madison, I agree. It took me awhile to figure it out at the expense of some of my little critters...I didn't have them a whole lot of years...the two that were indoor cats both were happy as can be and lived to be 17 and 19 years old. People think it's cruel to keep the cats inside, but actually it's the other way around.

Cats are opportunists and certainly don't complain about having humans provide them with warm quarters and an endless supply of food. They're also very efficient killing machines, and when their doting owners let them out at night they range far and wide. In Australia at least these predators are a major threat to native animals that have evolved no defences against them. Very few creatures are safe - cats will even take to the water if all else failed. This was demonstrated by the descendants of abandoned ship's cats on an island off the coast of South Australia. Having exhausted all other food sources, they can now be seen diving in rock pools for sea creatures. I guess cats occasionally fall prey to something bigger but not often, more's the pity.

Here's another version of the same story from the French side:

Fun to read articles from both sides of the Atlantic. Wouldn't it be cool if an airline picked up the tab to get Emily back to the US, maybe in exchange for a bit of publicity?

That's such a great story! My hubby saw it online at msnbc about an hour ago and printed it out for me. The pic shows Emily being held by the man who's accompanying her from France and looking out the plane window. For those of you who haven't seen it, she's riding in Business Class!

This story made the news in the UK when we were there the last weekend in October. Our British friends were teasing us as we, as well as the cat, are from Wisconsin.

There was a story a few years back about an English cat called "one two three" and a French cat called "un deux trois" having a swimming race across the Channel. Obvously one two three was the winner because as every student of French knows, un deux trois cat sank. See?)
Sorry.

What a darling photo. Maitaitom - thanks for the CNN link. Business Class no less.

Years ago, while visiting the Roseman Bridge, made famous in the movie The Bridges of Madison County, I saw a little black-and-white furry thing amongst the cornstalks, turns out it was a 2 month old kitten. Long story, short I brought him home with me to California. Sadly, we had to fly coach. He's still alive and kicking and a little pistol. He has never had the urge to venture outside.

Let me get this straight.

There are people who - or whose employers - have paid a premium to fly in business class across the Atlantic.

Then Continental Airlines puts a heaving mass of dander in the middle of them. So the poor fare-payers are stuck for 8 hours with all the allergies these repellant beasts can throw at them?

And they think this is good for their image??

Just remember this, American readers. Your taxes are subsidising these morons. I'll certainly never fly with an airline so crassly irresponsible.
