Telephone to Opéra de Paris ?
Has anyone successfully called the Paris Opera (Garnier) from the US? I have been trying to call them without success using the number on their website (892 899090) When I contacted my long distance company she suggested that the location of number might not actually be in Paris (I am using the Paris city code for international dialing), but a suburb. Can anyone help with this? (Trying to get tickets that are not listed on the website.) Thanks.

Mary, I would try again, using just the country code for France.
Is it 0033 or alike. Because the number seems to be fine (checked the Opera de Paris page as well) and will work as mentioned for inside France. No need for the Paris city code. It's possible they aren't located IN Paris, but that's why I think the country code would be just right.
Bonn chance!

Mary - I saw a similiar question, probably here, about that same type of prefix 8--- and the answer was that it was some type of number only available in France. Why don't you try some of the other numbers listed on the website for other services such as 0 144 61 59 65 or 0 140 01 80 54. If your French is good enough, maybe you can get info from them. I believe you drop the 0 when dialing from US. HTH

Phone numbers in France always have 10 digits.

Numbers in Paris and the surrounding Ile de France area start 01 + 8 digits, numbers in the north-west start 02, 03 for the east, 04 for south east and Corsica, and 05 for the south west.

Numbers starting 06 are mobile phone numbers, and numbers beginning 08 are commercial numbers such as tollfree lines, call centers, information hotlines, booking centers and so on.

When calling from the US you should simply dial 0 (to "exit" the US), then 33 (country code for france), then drop the first zero of the French number and dial the remaining 9 digits.

You shouldn't be adding any additional codes for Paris or otherwise, as when phone numbers are given in France, these codes are always included in the full phone number.

Thanks to all. Still a bit confused (and I spent the summer calling Italy without problem). The number listed on the website is: 0033 892 899090. My understanding is that from US one has to dial 011 to signal international call. So I tried 011-0033 892 899090 without success. Then I tried 011-33-1(city code)892 899090, also without success. Would be grateful for any help with what to dial here.

You do need a city code, that is what is meant by the prefix number "01" (or "1" from US) for Paris, etc. It's the digit before the 8-digit phone number that is referred to as a "city code". In that case, it's an "8", which is a toll number, but you should be able to dial it from the US, I think. It's like those numbers in the US that charge you so much per minute to call them (888 or 900 prefixes).

<<The number listed on the website is: 0033 892 899090. I don't think it's possible to call a French number with the prefix 8 on it from the USA (just as you can't call 800 numbers from France).

Call the main number of the opera house at 011-33-1-40-01-18-58. Someone there should be able to help you.

There is also the possibility of purchasing tickets online at the website, if all else fails.

Mary Susan is trying to get tickets that are not listed on the website. The Opera de Paris doesn't sell all tickets through the web. A thing, I noticed myself. Very annoying.

Mary Susan, good luck. I am trying to get tickets for the Maurice Bejart ballets performances in May.

Thanks to all for the replies, but unfortunately, not having a lot of luck. I called the main number that StCirq listed above and it just rang - no answer. Then I tried the number on the website for "groups of 10 or more" thinking they could get me to the right place. The phone number and dialing string worked (011-33-140 01 80 54) but the woman who answered responded (rather gleefully I thought) "pas de tout" when I asked, in french, if she spoke English. There was apparently no one around there who speaks English. My french can be servicable, but is probably not good enough to be giving someone my credit card number. I was afraid I would end up with 2 season series rather than 2 tickets, or tickets for 200 given the number I called.

I am considering just waiting until we get there and hoping there are some inexpensive tickets left. I am also considering calling the consierge of our hotel and seeing if that gets me anywhere. We usually stay at more modest hotels in the 6th, but are staying at the George V this time and I feel a little sheepish about having them get me 11 euro tickets since we don't actually like opera all that much! And I agree with whomever remarked on how irritating it is that they do not offer all of the price ranges on the web.

I ended up striking out on this attempt to get inexpensive opera tickets. For medium to high price tickets the web looks good. No one seems to speak English at the phone numbers at Palais Garnier. I contacted my hotel for help and got back a message saying they could get them for me aat 136 euros. Not much help. So we are going to wing it when we get there and maybe try the box office, or wait until the next trip when they are performing something we are more interested in seeing.

It probably depends when you are going, but I would think it is likely you'll get those cheapest tickets at the box office. Those are really cheap, I don't think they even have that rate except for the less popular operas. So, I think there may be some left. Of course, if you don't like opera that much or that particular one, you might even find it less interesting in the worst seats--although I understand your position as I wouldn't pay over 100 euro for an opera tickets, either.

It's not just the cheap seats, though, that they won't sell online, I can tell you that -- I have been unable to get some other tickets through their web site even when I wanted the best seats, but then I got them at the box office a few days before with no problem. I can't figure out their rules. I know several ticket agencies that handle them, but they only handle the more expensive seats, also.
