TAXIS IN AVIGNON?

Hi: I leave in 5 days and have almost all plans in order, thanks to all of you. But I don't know how to get from TGV train station in Avignon to the center of town? The hotel told me I had to take a bus? I have my luggage & a broken toe. Could I walk from the AvignonCentre station with luggage,if I get my ticket from Paris to that station rather than TGV? Should I rent a car? Traveling solo and hoped to take day tours with tour companies to all the mtn towns. Cant drive stick. Any private drivers in Avignon?Thank you! Johanna

There's a taxi stand outside the TGV station, near the place where the shuttle stops. It's a bit of a hike, because of the way the station is built. I'm sorry, but I don't remember the fare; I do remember that for some reason we had to wait a while for a taxi.

You absolutely cannot walk. It is much too far (not to mention across major highways), and Avignon is kind of up on a hill whereas the TGV station is water-level being right next to the river. You could walk with no health problems and no luggage--I'm guessing it's about 5 km.

From Avignon Centre, you could walk to the hotel inside the twon, it would be short walk. However, there are plenty of Taxis by the train station, becauses the short distance, they usually charge a flat rate of 8 Euro.

The TGV Station is out of town as the hotel said. It is possible to take some of the scheduled TGV trains on into Avignon central but it isn't a regular thing, hence the new station. Taking a taxi is certainly possible and the buses are easy. When you come out of the station there will be 2 flights of stairs, (downward). The buses are clearly marked, as is the taxi stand. Buses leave frequently, but wait to fill. Waiting now would probably not be a problem but in the heat of Summer I was certain I might die. I didn't and made it to the central station (clearly or I wouldn't be writing). It is about 10 minutes on the bus. You need to handle your own luggage of course. The bus will let you off across from the main station, just outside the city wall. Cross the street and there will taxis waiting right there. As a previous poster said, you'll pay a flat rate of 8 Euros for a short ride. Having said all that? I'd take a taxi right from the TGV station unless you are on a really tight budget. You might find the extra money well worth it if you're dealing with pain.
