France's 'Amelie' to star in 'Da Vinci Code' film

PARIS, Jan 22 (AFP) - French actress Audrey Tautou, star of the hugely popular "Amelie", has been chosen to play the female lead in the film version of US author Dan Brown's best-selling thriller "The Da Vinci Code", the daily Le Parisien.

Tautou will play Sophie Neveu, the young French woman assisting Professor Robert Langdon - whose role will be taken by Tom Hanks - in his investigation. The detective Bezu Fache will be played by Jean Reno, the paper said.

US director Ron Howard has been charged with the film adaptation of the novel, which has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. The movie will be produced by Columbia/Sony Pictures with a budget of around (USD 100 million (EUR 76 million)

and is due for release on May 19, 2006 in the United States and France.

According to Le Parisien, other French actresses considered for the role of Sophie Neveu included Vanessa Paradis, Sandrine Bonnaire, Judith Godreche, Sophie Marceau, Juliette Binoche and Linda Hardy.

The film will be 26-year-old Tautou's 17th.

Somehow I cannot see Audrey Tatou/Amelie in this role. Too cutesy I think or just so associated with Amelie.
I do like Jean Reno as Bezu though.

Tatou was not too cutesy in Dirty Pretty Things and gorgeous in The Venus Beauty Institute.

I love Audrey!

I was happy to hear that Ron Howard was granted access to film in the Louvre too.
