We loved staying at the Hotel Masson in Montreux (actually it's in Veytaux), which is walkable to Chateau de Chillon. With breakfast, a triple ranges from 180 to 270 CHF it looks like. If that's not out of your price range, you should consider it. Ask for a room overlooking the garent.

The website is www.hotelmasson.ch.

Here is the way I usually do this region. I stay in one village, usually Grindlewald. Wengen, although very nice, is just a bit too quite, particularly at night, but you might like that levl of peace and quite.

When I stay in Grindlewald, I usually travel to other villages for the walks and hikes. For instance, in Grindlewald, I might hike up by the Eiger glacier station. Then I walk down to Kliene Scheidegg and get me some pizza from the open air pizza over, followed by a frosty, cold beer.

You can easily access other villages from Grindlwald.

I agree with whoever said that moving around was a recipe for frazzled nerves.

Thanks Ingo for your hotel suggestion in Lauterbrunnen. I am still undecided if I will stay there or Grindelwald. Sunstar, could you please tell me where you have stayed in Grindelwald? Thanks.

PM, I stayed at the Glethcer Garden Hotel (a family run Hotel) and also the Hotel derby (Best Western).

The Gletcher Garden Hotel was up the main street about 3 quarters of 1 mile by the old church as I recall. It was immaculately clean and offered balcony views of surrounding mountains. The food was absolutely wonderful!

The Hotel Derby, although a larger hotel that caters to higher volumes of tourists, was also a very nice hotel that offered balcony views of the Eiger. The Derby also has a good restaurant as well. Better reserve restaurant for the weekends though as the hotel tends to get crowded.

I never had bad experiences with either of these hotels.

You can actually buy a Swisspasse or Swisspasses when you get to Switzerland..just go into any railway station and ask at the ticket window. No shipping and handling fees involved.
Unlike Eurail passes they do not have to be bought prior to arrival.

The Swisspasses are wonderful, skon. They're good for lakeboats, busses, and some city transportation, as well as trains. J.

I spent three nights in Gimmelwald and could have spent a lifetime. It is without a doubt the most beautiful place on Earth. Interlaken was very much a tourist city, but Gimmelwald is beyond words. We stayed at the Walter's Hotel, the prices were reasonable and the food was OK. The beds were awsome, we all had down comforters. Someday I will return!!

Just curious--how easy is it to do day trips to Grindelwald, Murren, or Wengen from Gimmelwald?

Cannot help with hotel in that price range in Luzern, but here is a nice B&B:
Pension Villa Maria, Haldenstrasse 36,
Tel. +41/41 370 21 19
Fax: +41/41 370 21 19

They also have triple rooms. 3 tram stops from the railway station, close to the lake.

P_M: Gimmelwald is just a short cable car ride from Murren. Day trips to Grindelwald and Wengen are also easy. But I would definitely stay in Murren instead of Gimmelwald.

We (includes sons 6 and 8 yrs old) just returned from a trip to Europe that included 3 days in the Bernere Oberland area. You have received good advice. Our sons' favorite activity was going to the Jungfraujoch (top of the Junfrau mountain).

Don't stay in Gimmelwald- there is really nothing there. We enjoyed staying in Wengen as it is car-free and easy to get to other sites. Murren, also car-free, seemed smaller but another good choice for a place to stay. Lauterbrunnen is centrally located.

Hi,
All hotels say the earliest check in time is 2:00 PM (14:00) and check out time is 12:00 PM. Do they allow if we reach that place before 14:00 i.e between 10:00AM and 12:00 PM. I'll land in Zurich at 8:00 AM and I hope I can come out around 10:00 AM and take train to Lucerne reach around 12:00 PM, can I check in that time ?
In general what is the earliest check in time in Swiss ?

Your valuable advice needed
Thanks

I agree that a person should stay in Murren, Wengen or Grindlewald, but I heartily recommend that every person traveling to this area spend some time in Gimmelwald.

Walk through the village and do some of the surrounding walks in and around Murren. Walk up to Walter's hotel and have a refreshing drink of coffee or perhaps a frosty, cold beer. Just sit and watch the Para gliders if they are out glide back down into the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Walk back down to the gondola lift and take it back to Murren. Get off at Murren and find your way over to the funicular that takes you above Murren. From there, take one of the many paths over Murren that takes you over to Winteregg. Do lunch there and take in the views.

This walk gives you some of the finest views of the Jungrau and company in the area.

The only view that is better is the one above Kleine Scheidegg in the area of the Eiger Glacier station.

I suggest that you stay in Murren and a peaceful day in Gimmelwald. Just my opinion here!!!

I have no idea about check-in times. I know that they will allow you to store your luggage at the hotel at least. I am assuming that if the previous guests leave the rooms not earlier than 12.00 they need at least one or two hours to clean the room etc. So you cannot expect to find your room available before 14.00 (2 pm).

Hi Ingo and all,
Can anybody suggest a good travel book to carry with me based on your experinces. I have seen few books in public library but I cannot keep more than 3 weeks. I want to carry my own book to this trip. The books I have seen in the library " Frommers Switzerland, Baedekers Switzerland, The Rough Guide to Switzerland, Insight Guide Switzerland, Lonelyplanet Switzerland and Rick Steves Germany, Austria and Switzerland". Please recommend me a good travel book either from the above list or unlised also fine.

Thanks
