Wren, it looks like Annecy will be low on Fodorites this year. After planning to spend 4 nights there over New Years, information I got here and elsewhere suggested that there really wouldn't be a lot going on there during that time of year. Consequently we've rerouted to Lyon after leaving Chamonix. I do hope you get there sometime, however. It may be overcrowded when you had intended to go, and undercrowded when I had, but it sure is beautiful in the Spring and Summer.

The winter info you have drawn out on this thread will be helpful to me since we'll be in Geneva for Christmas Eve and Day. I'm hoping that we can get to the Montreaux Christmas market before they start dismantling.

Enjoy Switzerland--and Alsace. Should be a terrific trip.

Hi Julie--I know!! Annecy is a place I have wanted to see for a good, long while! I am sure I will make it there someday!

I am on the lookout for a hotel in Montreux, so if you have any inside info, please pass it on...

At the Bären, ask for a south-facing room with a balcony. Those are the ones you see in this photo:

I think that includes most of their rooms, as they only have 14 total.

Enzian --good to know--and thank you for the picture of an enzian--would never have known the connection otherwise!

I have submitted a request and will wait to hear back.

They actually don't face due south; it's kind of south-west. But most of the hotels refer to their view rooms as "south side" or "south facing". The view is across the Lauterbrunnen Valley toward Mürren, and up to the Jungfrau, rather than back toward the village.

If they don't respond to your request right away they might be busy booking for ski season, or on vacation (some of the small family-run hotels shut down for a break between seasons.)

The color of the Enzian is the most startling electric blue you can imagine---hard to find in a flower. It is a real treat to see them.

Enzian--I am looking forward to the possiblity of seeing that blue in real life!

OK--Wengen is taken care of---now we will concentrate on the first two nights of our trip---do Montreux or Vevey seem to make the logical choice if flying in to Geneve? Are there any other possiblities that I haven't considered?

Hi wren,

There are lots of neat little villages around the lake between Geneva and Montreux. What kind of place are you looking for?

Morges is a lovely little town with a park at the lake and a promenade that I've heard goes all the way to Lausanne (I haven't yet cycled it). It sits between Geneva and Lausanne, and Audrey Hepburn lived nearby.

Nyon is a neat town with some Roman ruins, also between Geneva and Lausanne, also right on the lake.

Lutry is a wine growing village on the edge of Lausanne (toward Vevey) that is filled with boutiques and cafes. It's also right on the lake.

Villeneuve is one of my favorite villages at the lake; it sits on the other side of Chillon on the way to Aigle. It is a sleepy little place with a few small hotels and a few wonderful restaurants on their main street away from the lake.

Have fun!

You didn't say how you plan to travel - by car? by train? I was in the Berner Oberland last June and I would recommend Murren or Wengen over Interlaken for the reasons mentioned. I'm not too familiar with Wengen - just passed through there on the train en route to the Jungfraujoch - but I did visit Murren. Frankly, I found the town a little too cute, although it seemed like an excellent base for hiking as well as a convenient place to stay if you plan on visiting the Schilthorn. I stayed in Lauterbrunnen, which is in a very scenic location in the valley and is accessible by car or train. Lauterbrunnen is also a good base (along with Wengen) for visiting the Jungfraujoch. The hotel I stayed at in Lauterbrunnen (Hotel Silberhorn) had excellent rates (as someone else pointed out, it was between seasons) for a room with a balcony and a view of the Staubbach waterfall.

We plan on traveling by train--we always rent a car, but this time want to try to take trains the entire time.

Such a coincidence has occurred since I first posted! I have been in touch recently with a childhood friend who I have not seen for over 30 years! She is an American married to a Swiss--he is originally from the Bern area and now they live in Geneva. We are meeting this weekend for breakfast here in Florida. They should have some interesting ideas about our trip to Switzerland--I will post when I know more.

Right now, we plan 2 days somewhere on the lake after arrival into Geneva--after that--3 days Wengen.
