Switzerland by car
We are thinking fo renting a car for our 7 days trip in Switzerland. Since I am travelling with 2 kids ( toddler and and infant)...thinking that this would be better option for luggage and flexibility in moving around.
Can anyone who has done a car rental in Switzerland please share their experience, thoughts etc?
We land in geneva and are thinking of doing the BO and Luzerne area. Since we will not be buying the Swiss pass / family tkt...how much more do you estimate we will be spending in doing the Excursions ( Jungfrau, titlis, Pilatus, ? Gonergart, Lake lucerne boating etc)
Looking forward to your reply and help in making the right decision ..

I have always rented with Gemut - www.gemut.com
Great prices, a US company in Oregon. Lots of experience and their web site provides much information on rentals, what to look for, type of cars, etc. I have been very satisfied with them. Sign up for their newletter. It has good info too. I've always used them for rentals in Zurich but more than likely they can handle a rental in Geneva.
You'd have to look up the Swiss Pass cost vs all the cable cars/boats that you would take. Pricing is online. Try myswitzerland.com.

For your time in BO, you may want to check out the Berner Oberland regional pass. You didn't say when you're going, but the BO 7-day pass is currently offering a buy one-get one free deal for the months of Sept & October.

asmama, I don't think it's possible to buy it now when you're leaving in a few days. You can contact SBB by phone and ask if you can purchase the deal after you arrive in Switzerland. http://travel.sbb.ch/swissrailpass
Just so you know, the 7 day pass is a 3+4, which means that for 3 days, you get free travel, and the other 4 days, you get a discounted rate (50% off).

We just returned from renting a car in Zurich and doing an eight day trip throughout Switzerland. We rented at the airport through Alamo, booking an intermediate car. We received a Mercedes SUV an A class that is not sold in the US but it was perfect.Manual is standard there so be sure you know how to drive one.Have fun.

The car you'll drive on the express routes in Switzerland will have to have the road-tax sticker called Vignette affixed to the windscren. Make sure the car has it when you pick it up, or buy one before you hit the main roads. Fines are hefty.

Though I greatly prefer using public transportation (trains/buses/boats) in Switzerland, I can understand why you want a car. But, in the Bernese Oberland, you won't be able to drive to most destinations. I think you'd be better off establishing yourself in one nice, scenic spot, someplace like Wengen, Murren, or Lauterbrunnen, and making short daytrips.
