I guess it depends on your itinerary and travel purpose. I have no hesitation in recommending 1st class for anyone interested in getting the best view of the magnificant Swiss scenery and/or intended to travel on any heavily trafficed routes.

In both cases 1st class gives you a much better expereince in terms of what you actually get to see and in term of actually getting a seat!

On the less heavilly travelled routes 1st class often has empty seats on both side of the car, so you can swap between sides to get the best views.

Hmm. It IS my money we are talking about.
I think the gondola ride from Grindelwald to First is worth the wait for a gondola all to myself and my wife.

The train to the Gornergrat, get on the right side going uphill.

But from Interlaken to Bern, take you pick. Hills on the south, lake on the north. Zurich to Bern, down in a cut.
Cannot see much.

All depends on where you are going.
I drive the most scenic routes; perhaps that is my trouble.
