Hi tuscanlifeedit,
You can use the Fly/Rail Baggage offered by the SBB -- you buy it through RailEurope (the one and only time that travel agency is useful imo).
You get customs documentation and a clear green plastic tag. You fill in the forms and put them into the green plastic tag, and attach the tag to your suitcase.
Your departing air carrier just sees another tag on your suitcase, similar to identification tags that many people put on their cases. But when your case/s get to the Zurich airport, the baggage handlers there recognize the tag and send the bags directly to the train station for forwarding. I've done it two times (once when skiing, and once when travelling with my mom), and it works perfectly.
