Swallows and Amazons! (or a midweek break in the Lake District)

RM67 - we managed to find another branch of the same motorway services on the way back to Berlin this June - it was Sunday lunch time and it was hopping. no oysters this time but excellent salads, cakes, freshly squeezed orange juice and a roesti bar.

Wrenwood - we found Watermillock to be a really nice location - you have the Brackenrigg Inn a couple of miles in one direction, Aira Force waterfall a couple of miles in the other and a lot more peace and tranquility than some of the other lakeside villages.
Ann - I can remember a service station somewhere on the way down to the west country (M4 or M5) that had Pret and the West Cornwall pasty place which makes a bit of a change from Costa and KFC, but not sure which one it was. I agree there should be more independant stops all around the UK though - it is pretty poor really.

I did a quick check to see if anyone had included the most famous quote from Swallows and Amazons, but nobody has, so I will include it here.
The title is that of a children's book by Arthur Ransome about a family on holiday in the Lake District and the adventures that the children have in sailing dinghys. The children's father is away, but his permission for sailing is sought. He replies in a telegram "Better drowned than duffers. If not duffers wont drown". He thus encapsulates the basic principle of the English middle-class children's story.
Incidentally, one of the characters in the book is named Titty. This has been thought inappropriate for the latest remake, so she has been renamed Tatty.
On the topic of motorway service areas, a new one has recently opened near Gloucester which is operated by the same people who run Tebay. It has been built to a high standard and to sound modern eco principles - living roofs and all that. A lot of the food is local, and it's good but not cheap.

nor am I, RM, but I do remember that the german ones are called "Marché"; they are in some airports and railways stations too I believe.
Chartley - I would rather spend a bit more on a decent meal then anything on rubbish.
