Well, if you only got an email from the receptionist, it could have been a mistake in telling you there was a surcharge. So you don't really know, as you never protested it without the threat, did you? I mean you didn't write back and insist you had a booking at a certain rate that was confirmed, before threatening to contact the govt. agency.

IN any case, it sounds like it worked out okay and as long as your note was just businesslike that you didn't like the increase and were contacting DGCCRF to ask about it, it sounds like that can't hold it against you. It was their mistake, either way. So this is a good result of consumer action.

>Was it all really a "mistake"? Did they backtrack after the seeing the DGCCRF threat? I dunno.<

Nor do we.

It worked out OK.

Enjoy your visit.

Was might note businesslike? You judge:

>>I am very much disappointed that at this late date, you are informing me
that you will not honor our original agreement and that you waited until
I contacted you to inform me of the situation. It obviously puts me at a
disadvantage because if I am not satisfied, I must look for another
hotel.

Can we come to some sort of agreement? For instance, could you upgrade
our room to something nicer or provide some other amenity without
charge, such as transport to and from the airport? I sincerely want to
reach some sort of agreement with you without further problems. However,
I am considering contacting the Direction Générale de la Concurrence, de
la Consommation et de la Répression des Fraudes to report this matter
and discuss my rights.

Please contact me as soon as possible with your decision.<<
