Sooo, if the tickets are available more than 62 days out, is it a good idea to go ahead & purchase? Sorry if this sounds dumb, I was not sure if no fares show up until 62 days prior or if the discounted fares are released 62 days prior. Thanks!

If you are SURE you can make the trip, yes, you can purchase ahead of time sometimes for a reduced fare. Reduced fares come up similar to airline fares now. They tend to disappear closer to the date unless train is not filling well. Some routes do not have very reduced fares but good prices all the time as they are commuter type routes. ( Segovia and Toledo from Madrid).
Seniors receive discounts on some trains.. once they apply in person for a senior card ( 5E or so). However, sometimes the senior fare ( very flexible with no penalties) is more than a reduced, restricted promo fare.
If you are on the ground a few days before your trip you can always just buy the at a station. Some from a machine also. There is a fee to purchase at counter but it is minimum.

I just received an email from renfe telling me that I have already purchased 2 train tickets so I shouldn't have a problem purchasing more since my CC was accepted already.
They, like their website, make no sense whatsoever!

Hi, I have a question. I registered on the Renfe home website and am now trying to buy 4 tickets from Barcelona to Madrid. After I pick the train, it takes me directly to the payment screen for my credit card information but all the instruction websites say one has to put in the names and passport numbers of all passengers first. Has this changed recently or am I doing something wrong? Or is it skipping the identification page because I am registered? I did not put in all the passenger names anywhere, just wondering if I should proceed anyway. Thanks!

That may be on international trains.. I have never had to do that as far as I can remember unless traveling on a special senior ticket that has card corresponding to it.
I would assume following Renfe's instructions will give you what you have ordered with no problems. I doubt it will let you continue with purchase if they are missing information. Hope your credit card goes through for you!
