Suggestions requested for romantic weekend - Milan/ Lake Como area

Hi,

I am staying in Amsterdam and have booked flights for weekend during mid Feb'12 to Milan (for our marriage anniversary). I am flying in on Friday night and back on Sunday night.
I have heard alot about Lake Como (and Bellagio) as one of the most romantic destination in Italy. I am not able to decide whether I should stay in Milan or I should skip Milan and goto Lake Como/Bellagio directly. I want to spend the weekend as romantic gateway.

Request expert advice in this forum

Regards,
Anshum

Hi Anshum, Lake Como is wonderful, but in February many things will be closed. We loved Grand Hotel Tremezzo, but as with many hotels on Lake Como, it will reopen in March.
Stay in Milan instead. Or maybe spend Saturday in Milan, and take the train to Como (the town) on Sunday to spend the day there, then back from Malpensa airport Sunday evening.

Thanks Tulips, I was thinking that the activity in Lake como area will not be that much, but based in the reviews I read on internet, it seems like it will still be worth a visit.
Thanks again and waiting for further inputs.

Lake Como will only be worth a visit if you can see the lake and the mountains. That is not possible if it is snowing, raining heavily or if the water in the lake is so warm in comparison to the air temperature it creates a lot of fog. Then you'll only see grey and you won't find anything else to do. Other than the lakes, the big attraction of the lake is gardens (they will be closed) and shopping (many won't be open).

Verona is easy to get to from Milan and many find it romantic. There is even more to do in Florence, which is also a simple train ride from Milan. There are lots of towns, large and small, which have beauty plus romantic restaurants, etc.
