Milan or Como
A friend and I will be booking two "single" rooms in the 3 big cities in Italy. Anyone have any info on how small these rooms classified as "single" are? I keep hearing the superior rooms are small!
Also, we are leaving from Milan back to US. Heard staying in Como was just as easy to airport as a hotel in Milan - true? We have a noon flight and want to make sure we have plenty of time. Also, is Lake Como a good place to stay in late March or is everything closed for the winter until April? We're travelling independently by train.

Hi PC,
The size of single rooms varies from hotel to hotel, and they can range from very small and stark to pleasant and comfortable.
If you're communicating with the hotels directly, ask them about the single rooms and be specific about what you want. Many hotels will give you a double for single use at an adjusted price, or sometimes at the single price. It will often be a "small double", but fine for single use. I have done this many times with very good results.
Are you planning on only your last night in Milan/Como, and do you mean the city of Como or one of the towns on the lake? It is easy enough to get to the airport from either Milan or Como, but I think Milan would be the more interesting choice for one night. The towns on Lake Como are lovely but the city of Como itself is nothing much, IMO.

actually we were thinking of 2-3 nights, and wherever on the lake that we can somewhat easily get to Milan by our noon flight on the last morning without waking at 0 dark thirty. We're trying to keep the number of hotels at a minimum so we don't have to lug bags around. We're also thinking of a day trip to Lugano if there isn't much to do on Lake Como in late March

I think the town of Como is definitely worthwhile for an overnight. There are a few things to see in the town, there's a funicular up the hill for views if the weather's nice, you can catch boats (fast or slow) to all parts of the lake, and it's convenient for a morning departure to get to Malpensa.
