Suggestions for Honeymoon on Amalfi Coast?

I am planning to honeymoon on the Amalfi coast in mid-October 2002. Probably staying in Positano (unless anyone out there has a better idea ...).

- Does anyone have any hotel recommendations for Positano (upper-middle to lower-high price range)?
- Any sites to absolutely not miss?
- What should we expect for weather in mid-October?
- Any recommendations for quaint (even romantic) restaurants?

Thanks in advance.

CJ--See my posts for Brian under "Positano or Ravello?", just one or two posts below this one. I also reported extensively earlier this year on "Rome/Amalfi Coast/South driving, hotels, sites", last topped on 8/7/01. You might try a text search to pull it up for much more info.
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding; you could not have chosen a more beautiful/enchanting locale for your honeymoon.

I highly recommend the restaurant at the Hotel Villa Maria in Ravello (it is also a beautiful place to spend the night). And, of course, don't miss the Villa Rufolo and the superlative Villa Cimbrone there.

The Amalfi coast is beautiful. My fiance and I were there in September for a few days. We stayed in Positano and LOVED IT! (we plan to go back) We stayed at the Hotel Buca di Bacco and would definately recommend it. Beautiful room with a balcony overlooking the sea, great breakfast and very nice staff. We liked that it was on the beach--just a short walk instead of high in the cliffs where a car or bus would be needed to get to the beach. It cost 380,000 lira (about $180US). Be sure to ask for a view.

Have fun!

CJ,

I spent a few nights this summer in Positano with my wife. It is truly a spectacular city. We stayed at the Villa Rosa, which was recommended in the Karen Brown guides, for about $100/night. The room came with a private terrace(with a superb view of the city/coast), where we were brought complimentary breakfast each morning.

In terms of restaurants, we really enjoyed a place called Coperale (sp?). It is located at the base of the city near the beach, and has both indoor and outdoor seating. The food is magnificent, and the prices reasonable. Be advised that most places open for dinner at 7:30.

Have fun.

Cheers,

Steve

My husband and I stayed at Le Sirenuse in Positano and it was wonderful. Positano is a very romantic place. The restaraunt on the beach listed below was good, but there was also another restaraunt just above that one (in the same building) that was good as well - and a little more romantic since it was situated higher and had a better view.

We visited Ravello and went to the Villa Rufolo and the Villa Cimbrone there. They are both worth touring. There was a wonderful restaraunt in Ravello. I don't remember the name but if you walk past the downtown square toward through the tunnel where the taxis are positioned, the restaurant is just a few yards along on the right. You must decend a staircase from the main street to access it. The food and the view are excellent.

The Amalfi coast is a wonderful place to visit. I would advise that you budget to use taxi service to get there if you are coming from Naples. The local train service runs through some "uncomfortable" neighborhoods.

In response to the previous posting, it is my experience that you don't really need to take a taxi from Naples to the Amalfi Coast (it is an expensive luxury, although one could certainly justify it for honeymooners or travelers with a lot of heavy luggage). For those on a budget, one can take a hydrofoil during the summer months from Naples Mergellina Boat Station directly to Positano, thereby avoiding the longer Circumvesuviana train ride to Sorrento (which admittedly does pass through some very poor areas around Portici and Ercolano, though not dangerous during daylight hours) and connecting SITA bus ride to Positano. If your destination instead is Amalfi, you would take the regular train from Naples Centrale Station to Salerno (not Sorrento!!!), then switch to either the local SITA bus or one of the (faster) ferries going to Amalfi (the connection in Salerno is a mere 300 yards distant). Amalfi to Ravello is serviced by hourly city buses from early morning to late evening, costing less than $1.00 each way (although heavy luggage would be a problem). The taxi from Amalfi to Ravello alone would cost about $25.00. In any event, this area of Italy is so extremely beautiful that it should be an absolute must for travelers!

You can also have a driver pick you up at the Naples train station or airport and take you to Positano for around $125. I have stayed at both the San Pietro and Le Sirenuse and am going back for the third time since '98 for another stay at Le Sirenuse! The Villa Rosa has been recommended to me by a friend that stayed there as well as a local family and I believe has a similar view to Le Sirenuse. Congratulations on your marriage!

We were in Italy last summer and stayed
in Amalfi at the Santa Caterina Hotel.
It was wonderful! The hotel arranged for a car to pick us up in Naples at the
train station and our return trip. We took the bus to Ravello and Positano and did enjoy both places. We were in one of the less expensive rooms but the service was wonderful and the pool and view outstanding. We hope to return in
the near future. It was a perfect ending to a trip to Italy.
No matter where you decide to stay on the coast, you will have a wonderful time. Good luck!
Kay

We vacationed in Positano in October and it was one of the most romantic places we had ever been. It's fairly small so you won't feel that you have to see a lot of things each day, but can visit other towns if you want or go to Capri for the day. We rented a motorboat for a few hours which was so much fun - the highlight of our trip. We were able to swim, so you should have good weather in October(though we did hear it was unusually warm). The beach is small and rocky, but I think that's standard. It's not uncomfortable to lay on - only to walk on so bring flip flops.

Our hotel was great - the L'Ancora. I would highly recommend it. The staff was great and the rooms all overlooked the water with private balconies. We paid about $165 a night. If you want more upscale, the Sirenuse is right next door. We went there for cappucino and it was magnificent - pool, candle lit restaurant.

We ate at Covo dei Saraceni one night for dinner and it was great - great staff, good food, wonderful view, great wine list.

I'm sure no matter what you choose you'll have fun, but it is the most romantic place I've been to.

Just came back....it was fantastic. We stayed at the Covo dei Saraceni right on the beach in Positano. We loved it - had a great room with an incredible terrace overlooking the water. They have a nice pool....beach swimming isn't great. They also offer a great breakfast buffet in the morning.

You will love the Amalfi coast. It is absolutely beautiful.
