I think that I would avoid the No 1 or No 2 vap down the Grand Canal. Remember that those vaporettos are intended for commuters, and it can be tough going for a family of five, with three kids.
Depending where you are staying, think about a gelato at Nico's on the Zattere, or maybe later a pizza at the Ae Oche pizza place on the Zattere. It would be a ten minute walk from Campo San Stefano to the Zattere, over the Academia bridge, presently plastered with love locks. Both Nico's and the Ae Oche are kid friendly. Alternate places to eat would be Casin de Nobile in Campo San Barnaba ( which we know well), or Casin de Nobile on the Zattere (which we don't know).
The statue of the gent in Campo San Stefano is known to Venetians as "the Book Shitter". You might inform your kids

You are probably all over safety....but just a thought. When we took our young children to the Sydney olympics we wrote our cell number on the inside of their arms in permanent marker. Didn't need it but it was reassuring to know that if we got separated a grown up could call us. Have a wonderful trip.
