Suggested stop between Loire Valley and Chamonix?

On our visit to Europe this summer we plan to drive from the Loire Valley (Amboise) to Chamonix. We would like to break up the drive with an overnight stay somewhere between the two. We prefer smaller towns to the larger cities and have a wide variety of interests. Any suggestions for an interesting stop?

You might want to stop in Burgundy in a beautiful little town called Beaune. It has beautiful countryside with lots of vineyards and the town itself is very quaint with lots of shops, restaurants and wine tasting caves! We drove from Amboise back to Geneva last year (which is about an hour from Chamonix) and we stopped here. It worked out very well.

FYI - We made the drive direct the other day (5/17) from Amboise to Chamonix. We left about 11 (or was it 12?) and arrived around 6. We stopped for lunch and drove fast - mostly autoroute.

Consider this a viable option. It will give you more time in the Alps which were just amazing!

Stayed at Chateau Ige a Relais & Chateaux property near Macon with the town of Cluny nearby 2 years ago. Price was reasonable & food superb. They have a web site which i'm sure you can get thru Google. Location fits your need.

Consider chateau de Longsard, just 20 miles north of Lyon. Search "Longsard" here on this forum for more details.

I have cited it often.

Best wishes,

Rex
